Passage 1: Let's Go Bats
What it's about: How do bats find their way and hunt in total darkness? The writer imagines an engineer trying to solve the problem. Making artificial light would cost too much energy, so a better idea is to send out sound and listen to the returning echoes. Blind humans show a version of this — their so-called "facial vision" actually works through the ears, using echoes of their own footsteps to sense obstacles. Engineers built echo instruments (to measure sea depth, and later to detect submarines by sonar and radar) before realising that bats, shaped by natural selection, had perfected the same trick millions of years earlier. The zoologist Donald Griffin coined the word "echolocation".
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Light is costly; sound + echoes is smarter in the dark.
- Facial vision in blind people works through the ears. facial vision
- Sonar/radar were human copies of what bats already did. sonar/radar
- Natural selection perfected bat "radar" long ago.

Passage 2: Making Every Drop Count
What it's about: The history of civilisation is tied to how we manage water. Ancient Rome supplied its people with as much water per head as many industrial cities do today. During the industrial revolution, demand soared and huge dams and irrigation projects were built. But there is a dark side: over a billion people still lack clean water, dams have forced people from their homes and harmed river ecosystems, and groundwater is being pumped out faster than it refills. The good news is a surprising recent downward trend in water demand in rich countries, thanks to more efficient technology — so experts now call for policies that focus on saving water rather than only building more supply.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Ancient supplies were surprisingly generous (Rome).
- Industrial era: dams, irrigation, soaring demand.
- Dark side: displacement, ecosystems, groundwater.
- New trend: demand is falling in rich countries.

Passage 3: Educating Psyche
What it's about: Based on the book Educating Psyche by Bernie Neville, the passage looks at radical ideas about learning, especially George Lozanov's suggestopedia. Lozanov argues that the brain's unconscious processing makes stronger, longer-lasting connections than conscious effort — we often remember the peripheral details (a lecturer's manner, the room) better than the content we tried to learn. His language method uses music (classical, then baroque) while the teacher reads, so that learning feels easy and the "reserve capacity" of the mind does the work. The passage stresses this is not the same as hypnosis and that ordinary teaching often works against the brain by causing tension and fatigue.

- Peripheral details are remembered easily.
- Music + suggestion make learning feel effortless.
- Not hypnosis; it uses the mind's reserve capacity.
