Passage 1: Why Pagodas Don't Fall Down

What it's about: Japan's wooden pagodas have survived centuries of earthquakes and typhoons. The passage explains how. The heavy tiled roofs overhang widely, and a massive central pillar — the shinbashira — runs up the middle. Surprisingly, this pillar often carries no weight; in some designs it hangs loosely. Experiments by "Professor Pagoda" (Shuzo Ishida) on a shake-table showed the loose, stacked storeys slither to and fro independently — like a "snake dance" — while the shinbashira acts like a stationary pendulum, absorbing energy. The wide eaves work like a tightrope walker's balancing pole, letting the building sway gracefully instead of shaking apart.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Shinbashira: a central pillar that often carries no load.
  • Loose storeys move independently in a quake.
  • Pendulum effect absorbs and transfers energy.
  • Wide eaves act like a balancing pole.

Passage 2: The True Cost of Food

What it's about: Food in the West is cheaper to buy than in the past, but its "true cost" is hidden. Modern intensive farming — chemical fertilisers, pesticides, monocultures and battery livestock — has raised yields but caused huge damage: lost wildlife, polluted water, poor soil. Economists call these hidden costs externalities, borne by neither producer nor consumer directly. Professor Jules Pretty argues our real food bills are higher than we realise because we pay three ways (at the till, in taxes, and to clean up damage). He proposes moving towards organic farming and a "Greener Food Standard" to change the attitudes of both farmers and consumers.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Hidden costs ("externalities") of cheap food.
  • Intensive farming damages wildlife, water, soil.
  • Three payments: shop, taxes, clean-up.
  • Solution: organic farming + Greener Food Standard.

Passage 3: Makete Integrated Rural Transport Project

What it's about: After conventional road projects in Africa disappointed, experts tried a new approach in the remote Makete district of Tanzania. The MIRTP aimed to reduce the time and effort villagers spent obtaining goods and services. Research (Phase I) found households spent about seven hours a day on transport, mostly on foot and within the local area (collecting water and firewood, going to grinding mills). Phase II improved not just the main road but also paths, footbridges, steps and handrails, and looked at cheaper local transport (bicycles, donkeys). The project's real value was showing that integrated rural transport — beyond just roads — meets villagers' real needs.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • New approach: "integrated" rural transport, not just roads.
  • Research first: households spent ~7 hours/day.
  • Local needs: paths, footbridges, water, firewood.
  • Affordable transport: bicycles and donkeys.
