Passage 1: Pulling Strings to Build Pyramids
What it's about: No one knows exactly how Egypt's pyramids were built. A software consultant, Maureen Clemmons, saw a hieroglyph of men holding ropes leading to a bird-like shape and wondered if it was a giant kite used to lift heavy loads. Aeronautics professor Morteza Gharib and his student Emilio Graff tested the idea: using a kite, they raised a 4.5-metre, 33.5-tonne stone column from horizontal to vertical in about 40 seconds, even in a gentle wind, because opening the sail produced a huge initial force. Supporters note the Egyptians were skilled sailors, used wooden pulleys, and a glider-like artefact suggests an interest in flight; the Chinese later used kites to send messages. Critics remain unconvinced there is any proof kites were actually used.

Passage 2: Endless Harvest
What it's about: This passage traces Alaska's salmon fisheries. Long ago Russian explorers met the native land they called "Aleyska". Alaska's cold, nutrient-rich rivers feed the Bering Sea and support huge fisheries; salmon, in five Pacific species, are its cultural and economic heart. After overfishing caused salmon populations to crash between 1940 and 1959, statehood brought sustainable management — biologists monitor spawning fish in real time ("In-Season Abundance-Based Management") and can halt fishing on any given day. In 1999 the Marine Stewardship Council reviewed the fishery; despite a sudden collapse of some runs (blamed on climatic shifts, not fishing), Alaska's salmon were certified as sustainable in 2000.

Passage 3: The Effects of Noise
What it's about: How does noise affect people? Research by Glass and Singer (1972) found that people quickly adapt to short bursts of loud noise while doing a single task. But noise becomes troublesome when a person must handle more than one task at once (Broadbent, 1957; Finkelman and Glass, 1970). The most important finding is that the predictability of noise matters more than its loudness — unpredictable noise produces more errors and more fatigue in a later proofreading task, and even the sense of control (being able to turn it off) removes the negative effects. Studies of children near a busy airport (Cohen et al.) show chronic noise can raise blood pressure and cause lasting distractibility.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Adaptation: people adjust to short loud bursts.
- Multi-tasking: noise then hurts performance.
- Predictability & control matter more than loudness.
- Chronic noise: lasting effects on children.
