Passage 1: The Life and Work of William Perkin

What it's about: Before the 1850s, dyes came from natural sources; the purple from a snail was so costly that only the rich could afford it. In 1856 the young chemist William Perkin, while trying to make a malaria drug from coal tar, accidentally produced the world's first synthetic dye. He quickly saw its commercial possibilities, patented it, and — against the objections of his mentor Hofmann — left college to build a factory. He named the colour "mauve". Encouraged by dye maker Robert Pullar, and made fashionable when the Empress Eugénie in France and Queen Victoria wore it, mauve became hugely popular. Perkin's later dyes proved vital not only to fashion but to medical research (staining microbes) and, fittingly, to today's search for a malaria vaccine.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Before: natural dyes; snail purple only for the rich.
  • Discovery: accidental, from coal tar, seeking a malaria drug.
  • Business sense: saw commercial value, patented, left college.
  • Legacy: fashion, then medicine and malaria research.

Passage 2: Is There Anybody Out There?

What it's about: This passage is about SETI — the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. Scientists use huge radio telescopes to scan the skies for artificial radio signals that might come from other civilisations. Because the universe is billions of years old and contains vast numbers of stars, many researchers think intelligent life is statistically likely somewhere, yet no confirmed signal has ever been found. The passage explains the reasoning (such as the "Drake equation"), the practical methods of listening to selected nearby stars, and the debate over whether the search is worthwhile.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • SETI: scanning for artificial radio signals.
  • Reasoning: a huge, ancient universe with countless stars.
  • Method: listen to selected nearby stars.
  • Debate: no signal yet; is it worth it?

Passage 3: The History of the Tortoise

What it's about: Life began in the sea, and long ago some creatures moved onto land, evolving lungs and land-based reproduction. This passage explains a surprising twist: the ancestors of today's land tortoises went back into the water (becoming sea turtles) and then returned to land again — a "double return". Scientists worked this out by taking three measurements of fossil and living species' limb bones and plotting them on a triangular graph: land species form a tight cluster in one area, water species in another, and amphibious species fall half way between. The fossils of two early tortoises fell in the dry-land cluster, showing tortoises had a land phase before returning to water.
