Passage 1: The Effects of Noise on Children in Classrooms

What it's about: Hearing or auditory-processing difficulties in young children can seriously harm their speech, communication and learning. Research in New Zealand over two decades found that 6–10% of children are affected by hearing loss, and that modern classrooms — with open layouts, air-conditioning and collaborative, noisy activities — make things worse. Children with autism, ADHD or other "auditory function deficits" find crowd noise especially distressing, yet many have "invisible" disabilities that go undiagnosed. The passage links this to the New Zealand Disability Strategy (Objective 3: the best education for disabled people) and to international efforts to set standards for classroom noise.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Problem: noise harms hearing-impaired children's learning.
  • Modern classrooms: layouts and activities raise noise.
  • Invisible disabilities: often go undiagnosed.
  • Policy: NZ Disability Strategy; noise standards needed.

Passage 2: Venus in Transit

What it's about: A "transit of Venus" is the rare event when the planet Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, appearing as a small dark dot crossing the Sun's face. Transits come in pairs eight years apart, then not again for over a century. The passage tells the history of these observations: the astronomer Edmond Halley realised that timing a transit from widely separated places on Earth could be used to calculate the distance from the Earth to the Sun. This led to great scientific expeditions — including Captain Cook's voyage — to observe the 18th-century transits, despite hardship and mixed success.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Event: Venus crosses the Sun's face, very rarely.
  • Pattern: pairs 8 years apart, then a century's gap.
  • Halley's idea: use it to measure the Sun's distance.
  • Expeditions: global voyages to observe it.

Passage 3: A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think Differently

What it's about: "Iconoclasts" are people who do things others say cannot be done — original thinkers. The passage argues that their difference is really in the brain: perception is a learned "best guess" heavily shaped by past experience and by what others say. To see things freshly, iconoclasts flood their brains with new, unfamiliar experiences. Two big obstacles are the brain's fear system — especially fear of uncertainty and fear of public ridicule — which stops most people, and the need for "social intelligence" to sell new ideas to others. Because all three abilities (fresh perception, controlling fear, persuading people) are rare in one person, true iconoclasts are uncommon but hugely valuable.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Perception: a learned best guess shaped by experience.
  • Novelty: new experiences free the brain to judge afresh.
  • Fear: of uncertainty and ridicule stops most people.
  • Social intelligence: needed to sell ideas.
