Passage 1: The Language Debate

What it's about: This passage is about two opposing views of grammar. Prescriptivists ("language experts") believe there is one correct form of a language and that people should follow fixed rules of formal grammar. Descriptivists ("modern linguists"), such as Joseph Priestley, argue that the job of the grammarian is simply to record how people actually speak — popular usage — not to judge or halt natural change. The passage traces this debate back to the 18th century and notes that in modern times the two sides have been painted in extreme, even political, terms, though the truth lies between them.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Prescriptivists: one correct form; follow the rules.
  • Descriptivists: record real, popular usage.
  • History: the debate goes back to the 18th century.
  • Extremes: both sides caricatured; truth in between.

Passage 2: Tidal Power

What it's about: This passage describes a promising renewable-energy source: underwater turbines driven by tidal currents. Because water is far denser than air, a marine turbine blade only a third the size of a wind generator can produce three times as much power. The turbines sit on towers on the seabed, connect to the grid by cables, and can be lifted out for maintenance and to clean off seaweed. Researchers such as Dr Bahaj have identified many good sites (especially around Britain and the Channel Islands). One technical difficulty is cavitation — low pressure behind a slowly turning blade creates damaging air bubbles — but the outlook is positive.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Idea: underwater turbines driven by tides.
  • Advantage: dense water = more power from smaller blades.
  • Design: towers, cables, liftable for maintenance.
  • Problem: cavitation from low pressure. cavitation।

Passage 3: Information Theory — The Big Idea

What it's about: This passage explains the work of Claude Shannon, who as a young graduate student set out to pin down the exact meaning of "information". He showed that the most basic unit is the "bit" (a 1 or 0) and proved that, despite random interference ("noise"), information can always be sent through error-free if it is cleverly "coded". These coding methods underpin huge technical feats: the Voyager spacecraft sent stunningly clear pictures of Jupiter, Saturn and the Solar System using extra "check" bits; bar codes, mobile phones and data compression all rely on the same big idea.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Shannon: defined "information" precisely.
  • The bit: the most basic unit (1 or 0). bit।
  • Coding vs noise: error-free transmission is possible.
  • Uses: Voyager images, bar codes, mobiles.
