Passage 1: The Life and Work of Marie Curie

What it's about: Marie Curie, the Polish-born scientist, was a pioneer of radioactivity. After learning that uranium was radioactive, she showed that the element thorium behaves the same way, and with her husband Pierre she studied the mineral pitchblende, discovering two new elements — polonium and radium. She won two Nobel Prizes, was recognised in 1911 for her work on radium, and, with her daughter Irène, developed mobile X-ray units ("X-radiography") to help wounded soldiers in the First World War. She insisted on collecting radioactive material for both research and medical cases of illness; the Paris stockpile later helped others discover the neutron and artificial radioactivity. Years of exposure to radiation caused the leukaemia from which she died.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Discovery: thorium radioactive; polonium and radium found.
  • Recognition: two Nobel Prizes.
  • War work: X-ray units for soldiers.
  • Cost: radiation caused her leukaemia.

Passage 2: How Children Develop a Sense of Self

What it's about: This passage explores how young children come to understand themselves. The psychologist William James separated the self into the "self-as-subject" and the "self-as-object" — the categories and roles by which we define ourselves. Cooley argued we build identity from how we think others see us (the "looking-glass self"), and Mead saw the self as essentially social. Lewis and Brooks-Gunn showed that children can recognise themselves in a mirror around their second birthday (the red-nose experiment). Self-awareness also shows in a child's communication and in early struggles over ownership of toys — a notable feature of childhood in Western societies.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • James: self-as-subject and self-as-object.
  • Looking-glass self: identity from others' views.
  • Mirror test: self-recognition near age two.
  • Ownership: struggles over toys show self.

Passage 3: The Changing Role of Museums

What it's about: How should museums, especially history museums, present the past? Traditionally they were seen as collections of factual evidence, but the passage shows that museums increasingly interpret the facts to meet visitors' expectations and tell an engaging story. This creates commercial pressures on the people who run them, and makes museums resemble other public attractions such as theme parks. Opinion is mixed: some welcome the changes as making museums lively and popular, while others worry that entertainment and marketing may distort the historical record. The passage reviews these current debates and suggestions.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Old view: museums = collections of facts.
  • New role: interpreting facts for visitors.
  • Pressure: commercial, like other attractions.
  • Debate: lively vs distorting history.
