Why This Matters (কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ)

Bangla has no direct grammatical equivalent of English articles, which makes "a/an/the/no article" one of the single most common error sources for Bangladeshi PTE candidates — in speaking, an inserted or dropped article barely affects meaning but is still marked, and in Reading Fill in the Blanks (Dropdown), it can be the entire point of the question.

বাংলায় ইংরেজি article-এর সরাসরি সমতুল্য নেই, তাই "a/an/the/কোনো article নেই" বাংলাদেশি PTE পরীক্ষার্থীদের জন্য সবচেয়ে সাধারণ ভুলের একটি — কথায় সামান্য প্রভাব ফেললেও এটি মার্ক করা হয়, আর Reading dropdown-এ এটিই মূল প্রশ্ন হতে পারে।

The Three-Way Choice (তিনটি বিকল্প)

Use "a/an" for one unspecified thing being mentioned for the first time, "the" for something already known or uniquely identifiable, and no article at all for general plurals or uncountable abstract nouns.

ERROR"Government should invest in a renewable energy."
FIX"Government should invest in renewable energy." (অগণনীয়, সাধারণ বিমূর্ত বিষয়ে article লাগে না।)
ERROR"I attended the university in my hometown last year." (যদি এটি প্রথমবার উল্লেখ হয়)
FIX"I attended a university in my hometown last year." — first mention, one of several possible universities.
ERROR"The students generally prefer flexible schedules." (সাধারণভাবে সব ছাত্রছাত্রী বোঝাতে)
FIX"Students generally prefer flexible schedules." — general plural statement needs no article.

Article Traps in Fill in the Blanks (Dropdown)

These blanks often test whether a noun is being introduced for the first time (needing "a/an") or referred back to after already being established (needing "the").

TRAPResearchers discovered [a / an / the / -] unusual pattern in the data; [a / an / the / -] pattern later proved significant.
FIX"discovered an unusual pattern... the pattern later proved significant" — first mention takes "an," the second reference takes "the."
TRAP[A / An / The / -] honesty is considered essential in this profession.
FIX"- (no article) Honesty is considered essential..." — abstract uncountable noun used generally.

4 "___ students who study abroad often report improved ___ confidence and ___ independence."
