"Today's topic is the urban heat island effect. Cities are consistently warmer than the surrounding countryside, sometimes by as much as five or six degrees Celsius, especially at night. There are several reasons for this. First, materials like asphalt and concrete absorb heat during the day and release it slowly after dark, unlike natural soil and vegetation. Second, tall buildings trap warm air between them and block cooling winds, a phenomenon sometimes called the urban canyon effect. Third, human activity itself generates heat — vehicles, air conditioners and factories all release warmth directly into the air. The consequences are significant: higher energy use for cooling, increased air pollution, and greater health risks for vulnerable residents during heatwaves. Fortunately, cities are experimenting with solutions. Planting more trees provides shade and cools the air through transpiration. Reflective, light-coloured roofing materials bounce sunlight back into the atmosphere instead of absorbing it. Green roofs — rooftops covered in plants — insulate buildings while also managing rainwater. Together, these measures can measurably reduce a city's average temperature."

Type 2 · Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers

"Several strategies are now being used to help protect coral reefs from further damage. Marine protected areas restrict fishing and anchoring in reef zones, giving corals time to recover. Scientists are also growing coral fragments in nurseries and later transplanting them onto damaged reefs, a technique that has shown promising early results. Reducing agricultural runoff is another priority, since fertiliser and pesticides that reach the ocean can encourage harmful algae growth on reefs. Tourism operators are being encouraged to use reef-safe sunscreen and to limit the number of divers at popular sites each day."

Type 3 · Fill in the Blanks (Type In)

Listen and type the missing word into each blank as you hear it.

To carry out this experiment, first place identical seedlings into separate pots filled with the same type of soil. Water each pot with exactly millilitres of water every two days, and position all three pots on a sunny windowsill. Measure the height of each seedling once a using a , and record your results in a table. After weeks, compare the average growth rate across the three pots.

Type 4 · Highlight Correct Summary

Listen to the talk, then select the paragraph that best summarises it.

"Many cities are investing in protected bicycle lanes, and the results have been encouraging. In several case studies, once safe, physically separated lanes were installed, cycling rates increased significantly, in some cities more than doubling within two years. Businesses along these routes often report increased footfall, since cyclists tend to stop more frequently than drivers passing at speed. There are also public health gains: regular cyclists show lower rates of heart disease, and cities have recorded modest reductions in traffic noise and local air pollution. Costs are relatively low compared with major road-building projects, making protected cycle lanes one of the more cost-effective transport investments available to city planners."

Type 5 · Multiple Choice, Single Answer

Listen to the talk, then select the single best answer.

According to the talk, what challenge does the renewable energy sector currently face?

📄 Show transcript · ট্রান্সক্রিপ্ট দেখুন

"The renewable energy sector has become one of the fastest-growing sources of employment worldwide. Solar panel installation alone now employs several million people globally, with demand continuing to rise as costs fall and government incentives expand. Wind energy has followed a similar pattern, particularly in coastal regions well suited to offshore turbines. However, the sector faces a shortage of workers with the specific technical training required, and many governments have begun funding vocational courses to close this skills gap."

Type 6 · Select Missing Word

The recording ends abruptly. Choose the word or phrase that logically completes the last sentence.

"Before refrigeration became widely available, many households relied on ice houses to preserve food through the warmer months. Blocks of ice, cut from frozen lakes in winter, were stored underground in insulated buildings, sometimes remaining frozen well into the following summer."
