"Ancient Rome's system of aqueducts remains one of the most impressive feats of engineering from the classical world. At its height, Rome was served by eleven separate aqueducts, some stretching over ninety kilometres, carrying water from distant springs and lakes into the city using nothing but a carefully calculated downward gradient — no pumps were involved. Roman engineers achieved remarkably precise measurements, maintaining a slope gentle enough to prevent water from rushing too fast and damaging channels, yet steep enough to keep it flowing continuously. Where the landscape required it, aqueducts were carried across valleys on tall stone arches, some of which still stand today after roughly two thousand years. Once inside the city, the water supplied public fountains, bathhouses, and the homes of wealthier residents, with usage carefully allocated through a system of legal water rights. When the Western Roman Empire declined, many aqueducts fell into disrepair or were deliberately cut during sieges, and it would take over a thousand years before European cities again achieved comparable levels of urban water supply."

"Long before refrigeration, humans developed a range of techniques to preserve food for lean seasons. "Volcanologists rely on a range of monitoring tools to anticipate potential eruptions, and one of the most important is the detection of small, often imperceptible earthquakes occurring beneath a volcano. As molten rock, or magma, moves upward through cracks in the surrounding rock, it generates these small tremors, which can be detected by sensitive seismometers placed around the volcano. An increase in the frequency of such earthquakes often, though not always, precedes an eruption, giving scientists valuable early warning time to advise evacuations. This method is typically combined with other techniques, including measuring gas emissions and using satellite radar to detect subtle ground swelling caused by rising magma, since no single method alone is considered fully reliable."
