Personal Introduction Not Scored

Read the prompt, then record your introduction.

"Please introduce yourself. In your introduction you may wish to include information about your interests, your plans for study, and why you are taking this test."

1 · Read Aloud

Prepare, then read the text aloud clearly and naturally.

"Deciduous trees shed their leaves each autumn as a survival strategy for surviving winter conditions that would otherwise make maintaining broad, thin leaves both wasteful and dangerous. As days shorten and temperatures drop, trees gradually stop producing chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for leaves' green colour, revealing the yellow and orange pigments that were present in the leaf all along, while red pigments are often actively produced during this transition."

Trap: the scoring engine checks every word — skipping or mispronouncing one costs both Reading and Speaking marks.

2 · Repeat Sentence

Listen once, then immediately repeat the sentence exactly.

Show the sentence (after you try)

"The publisher decided to release the novel's sequel a full year ahead of schedule."

3 · Describe Image

Prepare, then describe the chart in your own words.

Household Energy Consumption by Use Heating/cooling — 45% Water heating — 18% Appliances — 22% Lighting — 15%
0:25

Trap: don't just list numbers — open with the overall trend ("heating and cooling dominate household energy use"), then give 2-3 supporting details.

4 · Retell Lecture

Listen to the lecture (taking notes if you like), then retell its key points.

"Today's lecture is about how scientists measure the strength of earthquakes. For much of the twentieth century, earthquake strength was commonly reported using the Richter scale, which estimates magnitude based on the amplitude of seismic waves recorded on a specific type of instrument at a set distance from the earthquake's origin. While useful, the original Richter scale became less accurate for very large earthquakes, since the instrument it was based on could not properly register extremely powerful seismic waves. Modern seismologists therefore generally rely on the moment magnitude scale instead, which calculates earthquake size based on the total energy released, factoring in the area of the fault that ruptured, how far the rock on either side of the fault slipped, and the rigidity of the rock involved. Both scales are logarithmic, meaning each whole number increase represents roughly thirty-two times more energy release, so a magnitude seven earthquake releases dramatically more energy than a magnitude six, not simply one unit more. Because larger earthquakes are calculated somewhat differently from smaller ones, seismologists now often simply describe earthquake magnitude without specifying which particular scale was used, since well-calibrated modern scales generally produce very similar values for most earthquakes people are likely to hear about."

5 · Answer Short Question

Listen to the question, then answer with a single word or short phrase.

Show expected answer (after you try)

"An anemometer." — one word is enough; a full sentence is not required.

6 · Summarize Group Discussion

Listen to the discussion, then give a spoken summary covering both viewpoints.

Speaker A: "I think restaurants should abolish tipping entirely and instead pay staff a proper base wage with the cost simply built into menu prices, since tipping creates inconsistent income and can encourage unequal treatment of customers."

Speaker B: "I agree tipping has real problems, but many servers in current tip-based systems earn more overall than they would under a flat, guaranteed wage, especially at busy, high-end restaurants."

Speaker A: "That's true for some restaurants, though that income inconsistency itself is part of the problem, since staff at quieter restaurants or during slow shifts can struggle considerably under the same system."

Speaker B: "Fair point, so perhaps the ideal solution depends on restaurant type: guaranteed wages might suit casual dining better, while some flexibility could remain for restaurants where tipping genuinely benefits staff."

Moderator: "So one position favours abolishing tipping for consistent income and fairness, while another favours keeping some form of tipping where it already benefits staff financially."

Trap: mention at least two different viewpoints — not just one speaker's opinion.

7 · Respond to a Situation

Prepare, then speak an appropriate response to the situation.

"Your neighbour's late-night noise has been disturbing your studying for the past several nights before important exams. Speak to your neighbour politely and ask if the noise could be reduced during certain hours."
0:20

Trap: match your tone to the situation — a polite, non-confrontational request works best with a neighbour.

8 · Summarize Written Text

Read the passage, then write a one-sentence summary (5-75 words) in 10 minutes.

"Fermentation, one of humanity's oldest food preservation techniques, relies on beneficial microorganisms such as specific bacteria or yeasts to transform raw ingredients in ways that both extend shelf life and create distinctive flavours, from yoghurt and cheese to pickled vegetables and traditional fermented fish. During fermentation, these microorganisms consume natural sugars in the food and produce byproducts, such as lactic acid or alcohol, that create an environment inhospitable to many of the harmful bacteria responsible for spoilage, effectively preserving the food without refrigeration. Beyond preservation, fermentation often improves a food's nutritional profile, since some fermentation processes increase the availability of certain vitamins or break down compounds that would otherwise interfere with nutrient absorption in the human digestive system. Modern food scientists continue to study traditional fermentation techniques passed down through generations, seeking to understand precisely which microorganisms and conditions produce the safest and most nutritionally beneficial results across different fermented foods worldwide."

9 · Write Essay

Write a 200-300 word argumentative essay in 20 minutes.

"Some people believe remote learning should permanently replace traditional in-person classrooms for most subjects, while others believe in-person education offers irreplaceable benefits. Discuss both views and give your own opinion."

Strong

"The debate over whether remote learning should permanently replace traditional classrooms gained enormous momentum following the widespread adoption of online education during recent years. Advocates for remote learning highlight its flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace, access recorded lectures repeatedly, and eliminate lengthy daily commutes, benefits particularly valuable for students balancing education with work or family responsibilities. Defenders of in-person education counter that classrooms provide irreplaceable spontaneous social interaction, hands-on collaborative learning, and direct access to teachers who can immediately notice and address individual confusion in ways that remote formats struggle to replicate. In my view, neither format is universally superior, and the ideal approach likely depends heavily on subject matter and student circumstances; certain subjects requiring laboratory work or hands-on practice clearly benefit from in-person instruction, while other theoretical or self-paced subjects may translate well to remote formats. Rather than treating this as an either-or choice, educational institutions would likely serve students best by thoughtfully offering both formats, allowing students and specific courses to determine which approach best suits their particular circumstances."

Mid

"Remote learning became very popular recently and some people think it should replace classroom learning forever. They say online learning is more flexible and students can study anytime. But other people think classroom is still important because students can meet friends and ask teacher questions directly. I think both learning ways are good for different situations. Some subject like science experiment need classroom, but other subject can be learn online easily. Schools should offer both choices so students can choose what is best for them personally."
