Why Definition Clues Are the Easiest Wins
Some GRE sentences don't just imply the blank's meaning — they directly define it. When a sentence includes a colon, a semicolon used for restatement, an appositive phrase, or a marker like "that is" or "namely," the rest of the sentence often is the definition of the missing word. These are the fastest, most reliable Text Completion questions once you learn to spot the pattern.
কিছু বাক্য ব্ল্যাঙ্কের অর্থ সরাসরি সংজ্ঞায়িত করে দেয় — কোলন, সেমিকোলন, বা "namely" এর মতো চিহ্ন দিয়ে। এই প্যাটার্ন চিনলে দ্রুততম ও নির্ভরযোগ্য উত্তর পাওয়া যায়।
The core method: when you see a colon, semicolon, dash, or definition marker, treat everything after it as a paraphrase of the blank — find the answer choice that means the same thing as that paraphrase, in the right part of speech.
মূল পদ্ধতি: কোলন/সেমিকোলন/ড্যাশের পরের অংশকে ব্ল্যাঙ্কের প্যারাফ্রেজ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করুন।
The Signal Punctuation & Phrases
| Signal | What It Does |
|---|---|
| : (colon) | Everything after the colon explains or defines what came before it. |
| ; (semicolon, restatement use) | The second clause often restates the first clause's idea in different words. |
| — (dash) or , (comma-set-off phrase) | An appositive phrase renames or re-describes the noun right before it. |
| that is, namely, i.e., in other words | Explicitly flags a direct restatement or clarification. |
| which means, meaning that | Introduces a paraphrase of the preceding clause's implication. |
| a term/word/quality that describes... | Directly frames the blank as the label for a description that follows. |
Worked Examples
"The chairman's leadership style could best be described as ______ : he made every decision unilaterally, rarely consulting his board of directors."
"Her prose is often criticized for its ______ — an excessive, almost self-indulgent use of words where far fewer would suffice."
Common Mistakes
- Reading past the colon too quickly: the definition is often the longest, most information-dense part of the sentence — read it fully before predicting.
- Matching the topic instead of the definition: an answer choice can be plausible for the sentence's subject in general (e.g., "leadership") without matching the *specific* definition given.
- Ignoring part-of-speech mismatches: the definition may use a verb phrase or noun phrase that needs converting to match the blank's required part of speech.
- Missing a negative definition: phrases like "far from," "anything but," or "hardly" before the colon/dash mean the definition describes what the blank is not.
