A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 1, Test 1, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 1, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: A Survey of Adult Education (Bar Chart + Pie Chart)
What the task shows: two visuals from a survey of adult education. A bar chart gives the reasons adults decide to study (interest in the subject 40%, to gain qualifications 38%, helpful for current job 22%, and so on down to "to meet people" 9%). A pie chart shows how people think the costs of a course should be shared: the individual 40%, the employer 35% and the taxpayer 25%. Summarise the main features and make comparisons; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক শিক্ষা-র জরিপের দুটি চিত্র। বার চার্ট—পড়ার কারণ (বিষয়ে আগ্রহ ৪০%, যোগ্যতা ৩৮%, বর্তমান কাজে সহায়ক ২২%, … "মানুষের সঙ্গে মেশা" ৯%)। পাই চার্ট—কোর্সের খরচ ভাগাভাগি: ব্যক্তি ৪০%, নিয়োগকর্তা ৩৫%, করদাতা ২৫%। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Interest & qualifications were the top reasons. আগ্রহ ও যোগ্যতা শীর্ষে।
- Social reasons (meeting people) were lowest. সামাজিক কারণ কম।
- The individual should pay the most (40%). ব্যক্তি সবচেয়ে বেশি।
- Link the two visuals in your overview. দুই চিত্র যুক্ত করুন।
Overview to aim for: adults study mainly for personal interest and qualifications rather than social reasons, and most people feel the individual — not the taxpayer — should carry the largest share of course costs. Cover both charts. ওভারভিউ: প্রাপ্তবয়স্করা মূলত আগ্রহ ও যোগ্যতার জন্য পড়ে, সামাজিক কারণে কম; আর বেশির ভাগ মানুষ মনে করে ব্যক্তিরই খরচের বড় অংশ বহন করা উচিত। দুই চার্টই ছুঁয়ে যান।
Tips: group the bar-chart reasons (high vs. low) instead of listing all, and use percentages for the pie chart. কারণগুলো দলবদ্ধ করুন; পাই চার্টে শতাংশ দিন।
Task 2: Why Do We Need Music — Traditional or International?
The prompt (in short): there are many types of music in the world today. Why do we need music? Is the traditional music of a country more important than the international music heard everywhere nowadays? A two-part discussion essay. প্রশ্ন: আজ বিশ্বে নানা ধরনের সংগীত। আমাদের সংগীত কেন দরকার? একটি দেশের ঐতিহ্যবাহী সংগীত কি আজকের সর্বত্র শোনা আন্তর্জাতিক সংগীতের চেয়ে বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ? দুই-অংশের আলোচনা রচনা।

Why music matters

Answer both questions: first say why music matters, then give a balanced view on traditional vs. international, ending with your own opinion. দুই প্রশ্নেরই উত্তর দিন: প্রথমে সংগীত কেন দরকার, তারপর ঐতিহ্য বনাম আন্তর্জাতিক—শেষে নিজের মত।
