Introduction: What is the IELTS Writing Test?

The IELTS Academic Writing test asks you to produce two pieces of writing in 60 minutes. Task 1 is a 150-word report describing visual data; Task 2 is a 250-word essay presenting an argument. It measures how well you describe information, build an argument, use precise language and organise ideas logically.
IELTS একাডেমিক রাইটিং পরীক্ষায় আপনাকে ৬০ মিনিটে দুটি লেখা তৈরি করতে হয়। Task 1 হলো ভিজ্যুয়াল ডেটা বর্ণনা করে ১৫০ শব্দের রিপোর্ট; Task 2 হলো যুক্তি উপস্থাপন করে ২৫০ শব্দের প্রবন্ধ। এটি যাচাই করে আপনি কতটা ভালোভাবে তথ্য বর্ণনা করেন, যুক্তি গড়েন, সঠিক ভাষা ব্যবহার করেন ও ধারণা সাজান।
Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1 (roughly two-thirds of your Writing band). Never let a long Task 1 eat into your Task 2 time — protect those 40 minutes.
Task 2-এর ওজন Task 1-এর দ্বিগুণ (রাইটিং ব্যান্ডের প্রায় দুই-তৃতীয়াংশ)। লম্বা Task 1 যেন Task 2-এর সময় খেয়ে না ফেলে — ঐ ৪০ মিনিট রক্ষা করুন।
Task 2 = 2× marks, so ≈ 2× time. (Task 2 = দ্বিগুণ নম্বর, তাই দ্বিগুণ সময়।)
Format & Marking (ফরম্যাট এবং মার্কিং)
Each task is scored on four criteria of equal weight (25% each), then Task 2's score counts double. Understanding the four criteria tells you exactly what examiners reward.

Task 1: Describing Visual Information

You describe a visual in your own words — reporting the key features objectively, with no opinions. Write at least 150 words in ~20 minutes in a formal style.

The overview is the single most important paragraph. Without a clear overview you cannot reach Band 6 in Task Achievement — state the big-picture trends before any numbers.

Task 2: Writing an Essay

You develop a clear, well-supported argument about a topic, opinion or problem. Write at least 250 words in ~40 minutes. Identifying the essay type correctly decides your whole structure.

Strong writers spend the first few minutes thinking, not writing. Analyse, plan, write, then proofread — in that order.

Analyse the Question (2–3 min)
Underline keywords. In Task 1, spot the key features/trends. In Task 2, identify every part you must answer and the essay type. মূলশব্দ আন্ডারলাইন করুন; প্রশ্নের সব অংশ চিহ্নিত করুন।
Plan Your Answer (5–7 min)
Jot down one main idea per paragraph before writing. A good plan produces coherent, well-structured writing. লেখার আগে প্রতি প্যারার একটি মূল ধারণা নোট করুন।
Manage Time Strictly
20 minutes Task 1, 40 minutes Task 2. Task 2 carries more marks — never overrun Task 1. Task 1-এ ২০, Task 2-এ ৪০ মিনিট; Task 1-এ বেশি নয়।
Proofread (2–3 min each)

Avoid memorised phrases and over-linking. Examiners spot template sentences instantly, and cramming in "Firstly/Moreover/In conclusion" everywhere lowers Coherence & Cohesion rather than raising it.
মুখস্থ বাক্য ও অতিরিক্ত linking এড়িয়ে চলুন। পরীক্ষক টেমপ্লেট বাক্য সহজেই ধরেন, আর সব জায়গায় linking word ঠুসলে Coherence কমে, বাড়ে না।
A Practical Study Plan (একটি বাস্তবসম্মত অধ্যয়ন পরিকল্পনা)
Phase 1: Foundation
Goal: Learn both task formats and the four criteria. দুই টাস্কের ফরম্যাট ও চার মানদণ্ড।
Do: Read model answers for every task type; learn paragraph structures; brainstorm vocabulary for common visuals and essay topics. মডেল উত্তর পড়ুন; কাঠামো শিখুন।
Phase 2: Skill Development
Goal: Build speed, vocabulary and grammar. গতি, শব্দভান্ডার ও ব্যাকরণ।
Do: Drill individual paragraphs; focus on one criterion per week; write 3+ full tasks weekly (untimed at first). প্রতি সপ্তাহে এক মানদণ্ডে ফোকাস; ৩+ টাস্ক লিখুন।
Phase 3: Exam Simulation
Goal: Master timing and perform under pressure. সময় ও চাপ সামলানো।
Do: 2–3 full timed (60 min) tests weekly; get feedback from a teacher; practise planning & proofreading within the limit. সপ্তাহে ২–৩টি সময়বদ্ধ টেস্ট; ফিডব্যাক নিন।
Feedback beats volume. One essay carefully corrected and rewritten teaches more than five essays written and forgotten. Always act on the correction.
