IELTS Academic Writing — Practice Test 1
Task 1: a line graph · Task 2: an opinion essay. Write both answers, get an indicative band estimate, then compare your work with three model answers (Band 9, 7 and 5–6) — each explained in Bangla — and grade yourself on the four official criteria.
How this works — কীভাবে দেবে
- You have 60 minutes: about 20 min on Task 1 (min. 150 words) and 40 min on Task 2 (min. 250 words). Task 2 counts double. টাস্ক ১-এ ~২০ মিনিট, টাস্ক ২-এ ~৪০ মিনিট; টাস্ক ২-এর নম্বর দ্বিগুণ।
- Write your own answer, then press “Estimate my band” for quick feedback. লিখে “Estimate my band” চাপো।
- Important: the estimate is a rough computer guide based on length, structure and vocabulary. A computer cannot judge meaning, grammar accuracy or task relevance — only a human examiner can. Use the model answers and checklist as your main guide. এই স্কোর আনুমানিক; সঠিক মূল্যায়ন শুধু মানুষ পারে। মডেল উত্তর ও চেকলিস্টই মূল ভরসা।

Band 9 186 words
The line graph illustrates how many people, in millions, visited three kinds of tourist attraction — museums, theme parks and national parks — in a European country over the twenty-year period from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, visitor numbers to both museums and national parks rose steadily across the period, whereas the popularity of theme parks declined. By the end of the period, national parks had become the most visited attraction, despite having started as the least popular.
In 2000, theme parks were by far the most popular, attracting eight million visitors, compared with just four million for museums and only three million for national parks. Theme park attendance then peaked at ten million in 2005, before falling steadily to only five million by 2020.
National parks, in contrast, saw dramatic growth, quadrupling from three million visitors in 2000 to twelve million in 2020. Museum visits also climbed consistently, from four million to ten million. Interestingly, by 2010 all three attractions received a similar number of visitors, at around six million each.
Band 7 161 words
The line graph shows the number of visitors, in millions, to three types of tourist attraction (museums, theme parks and national parks) in a European country from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the number of visitors to museums and national parks went up during the period, while theme parks became less popular. At the end, national parks had the most visitors.

National parks increased a lot during the period. They started at 3 million and finished at 12 million, which was the highest number. Museums also increased steadily from 4 million to 10 million. In 2010, all three attractions had about the same number of visitors, around 6 million.

Band 9 289 words
It is sometimes argued that teenagers should be required to carry out unpaid work for their community as part of their secondary education. I strongly agree with this view, because such schemes benefit both the students themselves and wider society.
The most important advantage of compulsory community service is the effect it has on young people’s personal development. When students volunteer in hospitals, care homes or environmental projects, they acquire practical skills and a sense of responsibility that cannot be taught in a classroom. For instance, a teenager who helps elderly residents learns patience, communication and empathy — qualities that will serve them well in any future career. Making the work compulsory ensures that all students gain these experiences, not only those who are naturally motivated.
In addition, requiring young people to serve their community strengthens society as a whole. Many valuable organisations, such as charities and community centres, depend heavily on volunteers and are often short of help. A steady supply of student volunteers would allow them to do far more, from cleaning local parks to supporting disadvantaged families. At the same time, students come to understand the problems facing their own neighbourhoods, which encourages them to become active, caring citizens as adults.
Opponents might argue that forcing students to volunteer removes the spirit of genuine generosity. However, in my experience, even reluctant volunteers usually discover that the work is rewarding once they begin, and the long-term benefits clearly outweigh this concern.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory element of high school, as it develops well-rounded, responsible individuals while providing essential support to the community.
Band 7 232 words
Some people think that students in high school should be required to do unpaid work for their community. I agree with this idea, because it helps both the students and society.
Firstly, doing community service is good for young people. When students do volunteer work, for example helping old people or cleaning parks, they learn important things like responsibility and how to work with others. These skills are not taught in normal classes. If it is compulsory, all the students can get these benefits, not only some of them.
Secondly, it is also good for the community. Many charities and organisations need help, but they do not have enough volunteers. If all high school students do community service, these organisations can do much more work. Also, the students understand the problems in their area, so they want to help more in the future.
Some people say that if we force students to volunteer, it is not real kindness. However, I think that even if students do not want to do it at first, they usually enjoy it later and learn a lot.
In conclusion, I believe that community service should be compulsory in high school, because it develops the students and helps the community at the same time.
Band 5–6 216 words
I think community service must be compulsory in high school. I am agree with this because it is very good for students and community both.
First reason is students learn many things. When they doing volunteer work like helping old people or clean the park, they become responsible and they know how to work together. This things they cannot learn in the class. So it is very good for them and for their future.
Second reason is it help the community. Many charity need help but they don't have enough people. If the students do the service, they can help them a lot. And the students also see the problem of their own area, so they want to help more.
Some people is thinking that if we force the students it is not a real help. But in my opinion, when they start the work they enjoy it and it is good for them.
So in conclusion, community service should be compulsory in the high school because it is very good for students and also good for the society. In my opinion every student must do it.
