A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 10, Test 2, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 10, Test 2, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Sales of Fairtrade Coffee & Bananas (Tables)
What the task shows: two tables giving the value of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas sold (in millions of euros) in five European countries — the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden — in 1999 and 2004. What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- UK coffee rose sharply (1.5 → 20 million euros) — the biggest change. UK কফি সবচেয়ে বেশি বেড়েছে।
- Switzerland led banana sales (15 → 47 million). সুইজারল্যান্ড কলায় শীর্ষে।
- Some countries fell: Sweden and Denmark saw declines in one or both products. কিছু দেশে কমেছে।
Overview to aim for: in most countries Fairtrade sales grew between 1999 and 2004 — dramatically so for UK coffee and Swiss bananas — but a few countries (notably Sweden and Denmark) actually saw sales fall for one product. Group the rises and falls rather than reading every cell aloud. ওভারভিউ: বেশিরভাগ দেশে বিক্রি বেড়েছে (UK কফি ও Swiss কলা নাটকীয়ভাবে), তবে Sweden ও Denmark-এ কমেছে। বৃদ্ধি ও হ্রাস গোষ্ঠীবদ্ধ করুন।
Table tips: select the highest and lowest figures and the biggest changes; you cannot mention every number. Use the past tense (the data is for 1999–2004). সব সংখ্যা নয় — সর্বোচ্চ/সর্বনিম্ন ও সবচেয়ে বড় পরিবর্তন; অতীত কাল ব্যবহার করুন।
Task 2: Studying Any Subject vs Only Useful Subjects
The prompt (in short): some people think university students should study whatever they like; others believe they should only study subjects that are useful in future, such as science and technology. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. This is a discussion (both views + opinion) essay. প্রশ্ন: কেউ মনে করেন শিক্ষার্থীরা যা খুশি পড়ুক; অন্যরা বলেন শুধু ভবিষ্যতে কাজে লাগবে এমন বিষয় (বিজ্ঞান/প্রযুক্তি)। দুই মত আলোচনা ও নিজের মত।

Free choice
- Students study best what they enjoy. পছন্দের বিষয়ে ভালো শেখে।
- Arts and humanities enrich society too. কলা/মানবিকও দরকারি।
- Future job markets are unpredictable. ভবিষ্যৎ অনিশ্চিত।
Useful subjects only
- Science/technology drive the economy. বিজ্ঞান/প্রযুক্তি অর্থনীতি চালায়।
- Better job prospects for graduates. চাকরির সুযোগ বেশি।
- Public money should fund practical skills. সরকারি অর্থ ব্যবহারিক দক্ষতায়।
A balanced conclusion works well: society needs science and technology graduates, but forcing everyone into "useful" subjects would harm creativity and personal fulfilment, so students should be free to choose while being informed about job prospects. State your own view clearly. ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ উপসংহার: বিজ্ঞান/প্রযুক্তি দরকার, তবে সবাইকে বাধ্য করা সৃজনশীলতা নষ্ট করে — তথ্যসহ স্বাধীন পছন্দ ভালো। নিজের মত স্পষ্ট করুন।
