A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 10, Test 4, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 10, Test 4, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: The Life Cycle of the Salmon (Process Diagram)
What the task shows: a process diagram of the life cycle of the salmon, in three main stages — eggs/"fry" in the slow-moving upper river (about 5–6 months), "smolt" in the fast-flowing lower river (about 4 years), and the "adult salmon" in the open sea (about 5 years), before it returns upriver to breed. Summarise the stages in order. টাস্কে যা আছে: স্যামন মাছের জীবনচক্রের প্রক্রিয়া চিত্র, তিন ধাপে — ধীরগতির উপরের নদীতে ডিম/"fry" (~৫–৬ মাস), দ্রুতগতির নিচের নদীতে "smolt" (~৪ বছর), এবং খোলা সমুদ্রে "প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক" (~৫ বছর), তারপর প্রজননের জন্য নদীতে ফেরা। ধাপগুলো ক্রমে বর্ণনা।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Three habitats: upper river → lower river → open sea. তিন আবাস।
- Three stages: fry (3–8 cm) → smolt (12–15 cm) → adult (70–76 cm). তিন ধাপ ও আকার।
- It's a cycle: the adult returns to the river to reproduce. চক্র — নদীতে ফেরে।
Overview to aim for: the salmon passes through three clear stages in three different environments, growing larger and moving from fresh water to the sea and back, so the whole cycle takes roughly nine to ten years. Describe the stages in sequence using the passive and time markers. ওভারভিউ: স্যামন তিন পরিবেশে তিন ধাপ পার হয়, বড় হয়, স্বাদু জল থেকে সমুদ্র ও ফিরে আসে — পুরো চক্র প্রায় ৯–১০ বছর। ধাপে ধাপে passive ও সময়-চিহ্ন দিয়ে লিখুন।
Process tips: use sequencing language (first, then, after that, finally) and the passive (eggs are laid, the young are carried). Include the sizes and time periods. No opinions in Task 1. ক্রম-ভাষা ও passive ব্যবহার করুন; আকার ও সময় দিন; Task 1-এ মত নয়।
Task 2: Should Museums Charge for Admission?
The prompt (in short): many museums charge for admission while others are free. Do you think the advantages of charging people for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages? An advantages/disadvantages (opinion) essay — weigh both and give a verdict. প্রশ্ন: অনেক জাদুঘর প্রবেশ ফি নেয়, কিছু বিনামূল্যে। প্রবেশ ফি নেওয়ার সুবিধা কি অসুবিধার চেয়ে বেশি? দুই দিক বিচার করে রায় দিন।

Advantages of charging
- Income to maintain and improve exhibits. রক্ষণাবেক্ষণে আয়।
- Less dependence on government money. সরকারি অর্থের ওপর কম নির্ভরতা।
- Visitors may value the experience more. অভিজ্ঞতা বেশি মূল্যায়িত।
Disadvantages
- Fees exclude the poor and students. গরিব/শিক্ষার্থী বাদ পড়ে।
- Museums educate — should be for all. শিক্ষা সবার জন্য।
- Fewer visitors and less tourism. দর্শক কমে।
A balanced answer: charging brings useful income, but because museums have an educational and cultural role, the disadvantages (excluding poorer people) can outweigh the benefits — a good compromise is free entry with optional donations or free days. State clearly whether advantages outweigh disadvantages. ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ উত্তর: ফি আয় দেয়, তবে শিক্ষা/সংস্কৃতির ভূমিকার কারণে অসুবিধা বেশি হতে পারে — সমাধান: ঐচ্ছিক দান বা ফ্রি দিন। সুবিধা বেশি কি না স্পষ্ট করুন।
