A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 11, Test 1, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 11, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Water Used for Different Purposes in Six World Areas (Pie Charts)
What the task shows: six pie charts giving the percentage of water used for three purposes — industrial, agricultural and domestic — in six areas of the world (North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Central Asia, South East Asia). Summarise the main features and compare the areas. টাস্কে যা আছে: ছয়টি এলাকায় শিল্প/কৃষি/গার্হস্থ্য কাজে পানির ব্যবহারের শতকরা হার (ছয়টি পাই চার্ট)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Agriculture dominates in Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia (over 80%). এশিয়া/আফ্রিকায় কৃষি প্রধান।
- Industry is high in North America and Europe. উত্তর আমেরিকা/ইউরোপে শিল্প বেশি।
- Domestic use stays small everywhere. গার্হস্থ্য কম।
Overview to aim for: the wealthier, industrialised regions (North America, Europe) use most of their water for industry, whereas the developing regions of Africa and Asia use the great majority for agriculture; domestic use is a minor share in every area. Put exact percentages in the body. ওভারভিউ: শিল্পোন্নত অঞ্চলে শিল্পে বেশি; উন্নয়নশীল এশিয়া/আফ্রিকায় কৃষিতে বেশি; সব জায়গায় গার্হস্থ্য কম।
Chart tips: group similar areas rather than describing all six one by one. Use comparison language (whereas, in contrast, by far the largest, a small proportion). Quote a few key percentages. অনুরূপ এলাকা গোষ্ঠীবদ্ধ করুন; তুলনার ভাষা; কিছু সঠিক শতাংশ দিন।
Task 2: Should Governments Spend on Railways Rather Than Roads?
The prompt (in short): "Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads." To what extent do you agree or disagree? An agree/disagree (opinion) essay — take a clear stance. প্রশ্ন: "সরকারের উচিত রাস্তার চেয়ে রেলপথে অর্থ ব্যয় করা।" কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? — স্পষ্ট পক্ষ নিন।

For railways
- Move many people/goods with less pollution. কম দূষণে বেশি পরিবহন।
- Reduce road congestion and accidents. যানজট ও দুর্ঘটনা কমে।
- Energy-efficient over long distances. দূরত্বে সাশ্রয়ী।
For roads
- Roads reach places trains cannot. রাস্তা সবখানে পৌঁছায়।
- Cheaper and more flexible for most journeys. সস্তা ও নমনীয়।

A balanced position works well: railways deserve more investment on busy inter-city and commuter routes because they cut congestion and pollution, but roads remain essential and cannot be neglected.
