A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 11, Test 2, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 11, Test 2, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: British Students Speaking Other Languages (2000 vs 2010)
What the task shows: two pie charts giving the proportions of students at one UK university who could speak other languages besides English, in 2000 and in 2010 (categories: no other language, French only, German only, Spanish only, another language, two other languages). Summarise the main features and compare the two years. টাস্কে যা আছে: ২০০০ ও ২০১০ সালে এক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থীদের ইংরেজি ছাড়া অন্য ভাষা জানার হার (দুটি পাই চার্ট)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Monolingual fall: "no other language" dropped from 20% to 10%. একভাষিক কমেছে।
- Spanish rose: "Spanish only" grew from 30% to 35%. স্প্যানিশ বেড়েছে।
- Multilingualism up: "two other languages" rose from 10% to 15%. বহুভাষিকতা বেড়েছে।
Overview to aim for: over the decade, students became more multilingual — fewer spoke only English, while Spanish and speaking two other languages became more common. Put the exact percentages in the body paragraphs. ওভারভিউ: দশকে শিক্ষার্থীরা বেশি বহুভাষিক হয়েছে; কেবল ইংরেজি কমেছে, স্প্যানিশ ও দুই ভাষা বেড়েছে।
Chart tips: compare the two years category by category. Use change language (rose from…to, fell to, remained the same, doubled) even though these are pies at two points in time. দুই বছর শ্রেণি অনুযায়ী তুলনা; পরিবর্তনের ভাষা ব্যবহার করুন।
Task 2: Are Laws Needed to Make People Recycle More?
The prompt (in short): some claim not enough household waste is recycled, and that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement. To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste? Laws help
- Fines and rules force reluctant people to act. জরিমানা মানুষকে বাধ্য করে।
- Clear, uniform standards across a country. অভিন্ন নিয়ম।
- Proven success where recycling is mandatory. সফল উদাহরণ।
Not the only way
- Education changes attitudes long-term. শিক্ষা মনোভাব বদলায়।
- Convenient bins and collection help more. সুবিধাজনক ব্যবস্থা।
- Laws are hard and costly to enforce. প্রয়োগ কঠিন ও ব্যয়বহুল।
A strong line: laws are useful and sometimes necessary, but they work best when combined with education and convenient facilities — legislation alone rarely changes behaviour for good. State your degree of agreement clearly. শক্ত মত: আইন দরকারি, তবে শিক্ষা ও সুবিধার সাথে মিললে সবচেয়ে ভালো কাজ করে। কতটা একমত স্পষ্ট করুন।
