A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 11, Test 3, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 11, Test 3, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Average CO₂ Emissions Per Person (Line Graph)
What the task shows: a line graph giving average carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions per person in four countries — the UK, Sweden, Italy and Portugal — between 1967 and 2007. Summarise the main features and make comparisons. This is a line graph over time. টাস্কে যা আছে: ১৯৬৭–২০০৭ সালে যুক্তরাজ্য, সুইডেন, ইতালি ও পর্তুগালে মাথাপিছু গড় CO₂ নির্গমন (লাইন গ্রাফ)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- UK fell: started highest (~11 tonnes) and declined to ~9. যুক্তরাজ্য কমেছে।
- Sweden fell sharply after a 1970s peak. সুইডেন দ্রুত কমেছে।
- Italy and Portugal rose over the period. ইতালি ও পর্তুগাল বেড়েছে।
Overview to aim for: the two higher-emitting countries (the UK and Sweden) reduced their per-person emissions over the four decades, whereas the lower starters (Italy and Portugal) increased theirs, so the gap between the countries narrowed. Put exact figures in the body. ওভারভিউ: বেশি নির্গমনকারী (UK, Sweden) কমেছে; কম শুরু করা (Italy, Portugal) বেড়েছে; ব্যবধান কমেছে।
Graph tips: use the past tense and trend verbs (rose, fell, peaked, levelled off, overtook). Group risers and fallers. Quote start/end figures and the crossing points. অতীত কাল ও ট্রেন্ড-ক্রিয়া; বাড়া-কমা গোষ্ঠীবদ্ধ করুন; শুরু/শেষ ও ক্রসিং বিন্দু।
Task 2: Reasons for Learning a Foreign Language
The prompt (in short): some people say the only reason for learning a foreign language is to travel to or work in a foreign country; others say these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a language. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. A discuss-both-views + opinion essay. প্রশ্ন: কেউ বলেন বিদেশি ভাষা শেখার একমাত্র কারণ বিদেশে ভ্রমণ বা কাজ; কেউ বলেন এগুলোই একমাত্র কারণ নয়। দুই মত + নিজের মত।

Travel / work reasons
- Communicate abroad and get better jobs. বিদেশে যোগাযোগ ও ভালো কাজ।
- Practical for tourism and business. পর্যটন ও ব্যবসায় দরকারি।
Other reasons
- Understand other cultures and literature. সংস্কৃতি ও সাহিত্য বোঝা।
- Improve memory and thinking skills. স্মৃতি ও চিন্তা উন্নত।
- Personal enjoyment and making friends. আনন্দ ও বন্ধুত্ব।
A balanced opinion: travel and work are important reasons, but they are far from the only ones — languages also broaden the mind, connect us with other cultures and sharpen thinking. Make your position clear in both introduction and conclusion. ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ মত: ভ্রমণ ও কাজ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, তবে একমাত্র নয় — ভাষা মন বিস্তৃত করে ও চিন্তা ধারালো করে। মত স্পষ্ট করুন।
