A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 12, Test 7, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.

Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: How Often Americans Ate at Fast Food Restaurants (Bar Chart)
What the task shows: a bar chart giving how often people in the USA ate at fast food restaurants in three years — 2003, 2006 and 2013 — grouped by frequency (from "every day" to "never"). You must summarise the main features and make comparisons across the three years. This is a bar chart over time. টাস্কে যা আছে: ২০০৩, ২০০৬ ও ২০১৩ সালে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মানুষ কত ঘন ঘন ফাস্ট ফুড খেত (বার চার্ট, "প্রতিদিন" থেকে "কখনো না")। তিন বছরের তুলনা করুন।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Most common habit: the "once a week" or "once or twice a month" groups tend to be largest. সবচেয়ে সাধারণ অভ্যাস।
- Change over time: note which frequencies rose or fell between 2003 and 2013. সময়ের সাথে পরিবর্তন।
- Extremes: the "every day" and "never" groups stay small — good for the overview. চরম দুই দল ছোট।
Overview to aim for: across all three years, most Americans ate fast food occasionally (weekly or monthly) rather than daily or never, and the overall pattern changed only modestly over the decade. Chart tips: use the past tense (2003–2013). Compare years and groups: while, whereas, compared with, remained stable, edged up/down. Don't describe every bar — group and select. অতীত কাল; while/whereas দিয়ে তুলনা; প্রতিটি বার নয়, নির্বাচন করুন।
Task 2: Money for New Fast Railways or Improving Existing Transport?
The prompt (in short): in some countries people think large sums should be spent on new high-speed railway lines between cities; others believe the money should improve existing public transport. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. A discuss-both-views + opinion essay. প্রশ্ন: কেউ মনে করেন শহরের মধ্যে দ্রুতগতির নতুন রেললাইনে বড় অর্থ ব্যয় করা উচিত; কেউ মনে করেন বিদ্যমান গণপরিবহন উন্নত করা উচিত। দুই মত + নিজের মত।

Improve existing transport

A reasonable opinion: improving everyday public transport usually benefits more people for less money, so it should come first — but high-speed links can be justified on very busy inter-city routes. Make your position clear in the introduction and conclusion. যুক্তিসংগত মত: বিদ্যমান পরিবহন উন্নয়ন বেশি মানুষকে কম খরচে সাহায্য করে, তাই আগে; তবে অতি-ব্যস্ত রুটে দ্রুত রেল যুক্তিযুক্ত। মত স্পষ্ট করুন।
