A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 12, Test 8, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 12, Test 8, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন। (এটি বইয়ের Test 8।)
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: How Geothermal Energy Produces Electricity (Process Diagram)
What the task shows: a process diagram of how geothermal energy is used to generate electricity. You must summarise the main stages. This is a process/diagram task, so the language of sequence and the passive voice matters most — describe each step in order, not comparisons. টাস্কে যা আছে: ভূ-তাপীয় শক্তি দিয়ে বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনের প্রক্রিয়া-চিত্র। ধাপগুলো ক্রমানুসারে সারাংশ করুন। ক্রম-শব্দ ও passive voice গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

- Cold water is pumped down an injection well to about 4.5 km. ইনজেকশন কূপ দিয়ে নিচে।
- It is heated in the geothermal zone (hot rocks). গরম শিলায় উত্তপ্ত।
- The hot water rises through a production well and passes a condenser; the steam drives a turbine, which powers a generator to make electricity. টারবাইন ও জেনারেটর দিয়ে বিদ্যুৎ।
Overview to aim for: the process is a cycle — water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up as steam/hot water, and used to spin a turbine and generator that produce electricity. State that big picture before the details. ওভারভিউ: এটি একটি চক্র — পানি নিচে, উত্তপ্ত, উপরে, টারবাইন ঘুরিয়ে বিদ্যুৎ। বিস্তারিতের আগে বলুন।
Process tips: use the present simple passive (is pumped, is heated, is driven) and sequence markers (first, then, next, finally). Do not invent numbers beyond the diagram. present passive ও ক্রম-শব্দ; চিত্রের বাইরে সংখ্যা বানাবেন না।
Task 2: Should Children Make Their Own Everyday Choices?
The prompt (in short): some people believe that letting children make their own choices on everyday matters (food, clothes, entertainment) leads to a society of selfish individuals; others believe it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. A discuss-both-views + opinion essay. প্রশ্ন: কেউ মনে করেন শিশুদের দৈনন্দিন বিষয়ে (খাবার, পোশাক, বিনোদন) নিজে পছন্দ করতে দিলে স্বার্থপর সমাজ তৈরি হয়; কেউ মনে করেন তাদের প্রভাবিত করে এমন বিষয়ে সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া তাদের জন্য জরুরি। দুই মত + নিজের মত।

Risk of selfishness
- Children may always put their own wants first. নিজের ইচ্ছা আগে।
- Without guidance they make poor choices (junk food). খারাপ পছন্দ।
- They may not learn to compromise. আপস শেখে না।
Builds independence
- Making choices develops confidence and responsibility. আত্মবিশ্বাস ও দায়িত্ব।
- Children learn from small mistakes safely. ছোট ভুল থেকে শেখা।
- Being heard makes them feel respected. সম্মানিত বোধ।
A balanced opinion works well: children should be allowed to make age-appropriate choices with parental guidance — this builds independence without encouraging pure selfishness, since parents can explain limits and the needs of others. State your position clearly in the introduction and conclusion. ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ মত: অভিভাবকের দিকনির্দেশনায় বয়স-উপযোগী পছন্দ করতে দেওয়া উচিত — এতে স্বাধীনতা গড়ে ওঠে, স্বার্থপরতা নয়। মত স্পষ্ট করুন।
