A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 14, Test 3, Writing. Writing has no single correct answer, so this page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.

Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: How a Hydroelectric Power Station Works
What the task shows: a diagram/process of a hydroelectric power station that works differently by day and by night. You must summarise how it generates electricity and make comparisons where relevant. This is a process description, not a chart — so use the passive and sequencing language. টাস্কে যা আছে: একটি জলবিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রের ডায়াগ্রাম, যা দিনে ও রাতে ভিন্নভাবে কাজ করে। প্রক্রিয়া বর্ণনা — passive ও ধারাক্রম ভাষা ব্যবহার করুন।
The two stages (দুটি ধাপ)
- Daytime (generating): the intake is open; water flows from the high-level reservoir, through the dam, down to the reversible turbines, which drive the generator. Electricity travels along power lines to the national grid, and the water passes into the low-level reservoir. দিনে: ইনটেক খোলা; উঁচু জলাধার → টারবাইন → জেনারেটর → বিদ্যুৎ; পানি নিচু জলাধারে।
- Night-time (pumping): the intake is closed; the turbines reverse and pump water back up from the low-level reservoir into the high-level reservoir, ready to generate again next day. রাতে: ইনটেক বন্ধ; টারবাইন উল্টো ঘুরে পানি নিচু থেকে উঁচু জলাধারে তোলে।
Overview to aim for: the station runs a two-part cycle — it produces electricity by releasing stored water through turbines during the day, and at night it uses power to pump the water back up, so the same water is reused. ওভারভিউ: এটি দুই-ধাপের চক্র — দিনে পানি ছেড়ে বিদ্যুৎ, রাতে পানি আবার তুলে রাখা; একই পানি পুনর্ব্যবহৃত।
Process tips: describe day and night as a cycle, use sequencers (first, then, next, finally) and the passive (water is released / is pumped). Don't invent numbers — the diagram has none. চক্র হিসেবে দেখান; sequencer ও passive ব্যবহার করুন; সংখ্যা বানাবেন না।
Task 2: Does Music Bring Different Cultures and Ages Together? (Agree/Disagree)
The prompt (in short): some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree? This is an opinion (agree/disagree) essay — take a clear position and support it throughout. প্রশ্ন: কেউ বলেন সঙ্গীত ভিন্ন সংস্কৃতি ও বয়সের মানুষকে একত্র করার ভালো উপায়। কতটা একমত? স্পষ্ট অবস্থান নিন।

Music unites people
- Music is a "universal language" needing no translation. সঙ্গীত সর্বজনীন ভাষা।
- Festivals and concerts mix cultures and generations. উৎসব-কনসার্টে মিশ্রণ।
- Old and young share songs; traditions pass down. পুরনো-নতুন গান ভাগ করে।
- World music spreads appreciation of other cultures. ওয়ার্ল্ড মিউজিক।
Limits / other side
- Musical taste often divides generations and groups. রুচি অনেক সময় বিভক্ত করে।
- Some music is tied to one culture and excludes others. কিছু সঙ্গীত একক সংস্কৃতির।
- Real unity needs more than shared listening. শুধু শোনাই যথেষ্ট নয়।
A balanced but clear answer: mostly agree — music can powerfully connect people across cultures and ages (shared festivals, universal appeal), while acknowledging that tastes sometimes differ. Make your degree of agreement explicit in the introduction and conclusion. প্রধানত একমত: সঙ্গীত সংস্কৃতি ও বয়সের সেতু, তবে রুচির ভিন্নতাও স্বীকার করুন। একমতের মাত্রা স্পষ্ট করুন।
