A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 16, Test 2, Writing. Writing has no single correct answer, so this page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.

Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: How Sugar Is Produced from Sugar Cane (Process)
What the task shows: a diagram of the seven-stage manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane — (1) growing, (2) harvesting, (3) crushing, (4) purifying the juice, (5) evaporating, (6) centrifuging, (7) drying and cooling. Your job: describe the stages of the process in your own words. টাস্কে যা আছে: আখ থেকে চিনি তৈরির সাত-ধাপের প্রক্রিয়া — বৃদ্ধি, সংগ্রহ, পেষা, রস পরিশোধন, বাষ্পীভবন, সেন্ট্রিফিউজ, শুকানো ও ঠান্ডা করা। কাজ: নিজের ভাষায় ধাপগুলো বর্ণনা।

The key insight for your overview: the process is linear and man-made, moving from a natural crop to a finished, packaged product. Cane is grown for 12–18 months, harvested, crushed to extract juice, then the juice is purified, evaporated into syrup, spun in a centrifuge to separate the sugar crystals, and finally dried and cooled. Say how many stages there are and that it is a continuous sequence.
ওভারভিউয়ের মূল কথা: প্রক্রিয়াটি রৈখিক ও মানবসৃষ্ট — প্রাকৃতিক ফসল থেকে প্যাকেটজাত পণ্যে। কয়টি ধাপ ও ধারাবাহিক তা বলুন।
Common mistakes with process tasks: (1) no overview; (2) not using the passive voice (the cane is harvested, the juice is purified); (3) no sequencers. Use first, next, after that, once … has been …, finally to link the stages, and don't invent data — a process has no numbers to compare.
প্রক্রিয়া টাস্কে সাধারণ ভুল: ওভারভিউ না থাকা; passive না ব্যবহার; ক্রম-শব্দ না থাকা। first, next, after that, finally ব্যবহার করুন; নিজে সংখ্যা বানাবেন না।
Task 2: Advertising Products as "New" (Reasons + Opinion)
The prompt (in short): "In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?" This is a reasons + opinion essay: explain the cause, then give a clear positive/negative judgement and defend it. প্রশ্ন (সংক্ষেপে): "বিজ্ঞাপনে ব্যবসাগুলো পণ্যকে 'নতুন' হিসেবে জোর দেয়। কেন? এটি ইতিবাচক না নেতিবাচক?" এটি কারণ + মতামত রচনা: কারণ ব্যাখ্যা, তারপর স্পষ্ট রায়।

Why businesses do it
- "New" attracts attention in a crowded market. মনোযোগ কাড়ে।
- It suggests improvement and better technology. উন্নতির ইঙ্গিত।
- It encourages people to replace old items and buy more. বেশি কেনায় উৎসাহ।
Positive vs negative
- Positive: drives innovation and gives consumers choice. উদ্ভাবন ও পছন্দ।
- Negative: fuels over-consumption and waste. অপচয় বাড়ায়।
- Negative: "new" can be a misleading marketing trick. বিভ্রান্তিকর কৌশল।
Answer both parts. First give 2–3 clear reasons; then take a side. A balanced but decisive line works well: it is a largely negative development because it drives waste and consumerism, even though it can spur useful innovation. Support each claim with an example (phones, fashion). দুটি অংশেরই উত্তর দিন। আগে কারণ, তারপর একটি পক্ষ নিন — যেমন "মূলত নেতিবাচক" — উদাহরণসহ (ফোন, ফ্যাশন)।
