A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 17, Test 2, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 17, Test 2, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন। এখানে টাস্ক বিশ্লেষণ, কাঠামো ও পরিকল্পনা, দরকারি ভাষা ও টিপস — আমাদের নিজের ভাষায়।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Police Budget 2017–2018 (Table + Two Pie Charts)
What the task shows: a table of where police funding came from in one area of Britain (National Government, Local Taxes, Other sources) for 2017 and 2018, plus two pie charts showing how the money was spent (Salaries, Technology, Buildings and transport). Your job: select and report the main features and make comparisons across both the table and the charts. টাস্কে যা আছে: ব্রিটেনের এক এলাকায় পুলিশের অর্থ কোথা থেকে এসেছে তার টেবিল (জাতীয় সরকার, স্থানীয় কর, অন্যান্য) ২০১৭ ও ২০১৮; সাথে অর্থ কীভাবে খরচ হয়েছে তার দুটি পাই চার্ট। কাজ: টেবিল ও চার্ট—দুটোরই মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য বেছে তুলনা।

The key insight for your overview: total funding rose from 2017 to 2018 (mainly from higher Local Taxes), while spending was always dominated by salaries — although the salary share fell and technology's share rose. Combine one feature from the table and one from the charts in a two-sentence overview, with no specific figures.
ওভারভিউয়ের মূল কথা: মোট অর্থ বেড়েছে (মূলত স্থানীয় কর থেকে), আর খরচে সবসময় বেতনই প্রধান — যদিও বেতনের হিস্যা কমে ও প্রযুক্তির হিস্যা বাড়ে। টেবিল থেকে একটি ও চার্ট থেকে একটি বৈশিষ্ট্য মিলিয়ে সংখ্যা ছাড়া ওভারভিউ লিখুন।
Common mistakes with mixed visuals: (1) describing only one of the two visuals; (2) confusing money amounts (table, in £m) with percentages (pie charts, in %); (3) no overview. Cover both, and keep amounts and percentages clearly separate.
মিশ্র চিত্রে সাধারণ ভুল: শুধু একটি চিত্র বর্ণনা; টাকার পরিমাণ (£m) ও শতাংশ (%) গুলিয়ে ফেলা; ওভারভিউ না থাকা।
Task 2: Children Spending Hours on Smartphones
The prompt (in short): "Some children spend hours every day on their smartphones. Why is this the case? Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?" This is a two-part (cause + opinion) essay: first explain the reasons, then give and defend your view. প্রশ্ন (সংক্ষেপে): "কিছু শিশু প্রতিদিন ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা স্মার্টফোনে কাটায়। কেন? এটি ইতিবাচক না নেতিবাচক?" এটি দুই অংশের (কারণ + মতামত) রচনা: আগে কারণ, তারপর মত।

Why it happens
- Games, videos and social media are designed to be addictive. গেম/ভিডিও আসক্তিমূলক।
- Parents are busy and use phones to keep children occupied. ব্যস্ত অভিভাবক ফোন দেন।
- Phones are cheap and internet is widely available. সস্তা ফোন ও ইন্টারনেট।
Positive vs negative
- + Learning apps, information and staying in touch. শেখা ও যোগাযোগ।
- – Harm to eyesight, sleep and physical activity. চোখ, ঘুম, শারীরিক ক্ষতি।
- – Less face-to-face social skill and shorter attention. সামাজিক দক্ষতা কমে।
A strong line: excessive daily use is mainly negative because of the health and social costs, even though phones have educational value — the problem is the amount, not the device. Support each reason with a specific example. শক্তিশালী অবস্থান: অতিরিক্ত ব্যবহার মূলত নেতিবাচক (স্বাস্থ্য ও সামাজিক ক্ষতি), যদিও ফোনের শিক্ষামূলক মূল্য আছে — সমস্যা পরিমাণে। প্রতিটি কারণে উদাহরণ দিন।
