A study companion for the Cambridge IELTS 17, Test 4, Speaking topics. This page gives the topic of each part, an original model approach, and useful phrases and vocabulary — all in our own words.

Don't memorise. These are ideas and language to practise with — not a script to recite. Examiners spot memorised answers and lower your score.

Two golden habits: in Part 1, use Answer + Reason + Example. In Part 3, use Point → Explain → Example (P-E-E).

Part 1: Maps
Part 1 asks simple, familiar questions (4–5 minutes). Here the topic is maps — whether you prefer a paper map or a map on your phone, when you last needed to use a map, whether you always use a map in a new city, and whether you find it easy to read maps. Part 1-এ পরিচিত সহজ প্রশ্ন (৪–৫ মিনিট)। বিষয় মানচিত্র — কাগজের না ফোনের মানচিত্র পছন্দ, শেষ কবে দরকার হলো, নতুন শহরে সবসময় ব্যবহার করেন কি না, মানচিত্র পড়া সহজ লাগে কি না।
Model approach (মডেল পদ্ধতি)
Answer directly, then extend with a reason or example. For "paper map or phone map?", state your preference, give a reason (phone maps show live traffic; paper maps never run out of battery), and add a detail (a time you used one). This lets you use comparison language naturally. সরাসরি উত্তর, তারপর কারণ/উদাহরণ। "কাগজ না ফোন?" — পছন্দ, কারণ (ফোনে লাইভ ট্রাফিক; কাগজে ব্যাটারি লাগে না), একটি অভিজ্ঞতা।
Useful openers: "I'd say I prefer … because…", "The last time I used a map was when…", "Honestly, I find maps fairly easy/tricky because…"
শুরুর বাক্যের পর because/since দিয়ে কারণ যোগ করুন।
Part 2: Describe an occasion when you had to do something in a hurry
You get a cue card, one minute to prepare, then speak for 1–2 minutes. The card asks: what you had to do, why you had to do it in a hurry, how well you did it, and to explain how you felt about having to do it in a hurry. কিউ কার্ড, ১ মিনিট প্রস্তুতি, তারপর ১–২ মিনিট। কার্ডে: কী করতে হয়েছিল, কেন তাড়াহুড়ো, কতটা ভালো করলেন, কেমন লেগেছিল।

Good choices: finishing an assignment near the deadline, packing quickly for a sudden trip, rushing to catch a train or flight, or preparing for unexpected guests. Tell it as a short story in the past tense; make the last point (how you felt) the richest — the pressure, the rush, and the relief afterwards. ভালো উদাহরণ: শেষ মুহূর্তে অ্যাসাইনমেন্ট, হঠাৎ ভ্রমণের ব্যাগ গোছানো, ট্রেন/ফ্লাইট ধরা, অপ্রত্যাশিত অতিথি। past tense-এ ছোট গল্পের মতো; শেষে অনুভূতি সবচেয়ে বড় রাখুন।
Part 3: Arriving Late; Managing Study Time
Part 3 is a two-way discussion (4–5 minutes). Themes: arriving late (whether it's OK to be late meeting a friend, what should happen to people who arrive late for work, how people can avoid lateness) and managing study time (long periods vs shorter blocks, the effects of poor time management, how important leisure time is for students). Part 3 আলোচনা। বিষয়: দেরিতে আসা; পড়ার সময় ব্যবস্থাপনা।
How to develop answers (উত্তর কীভাবে বাড়াবেন)
Use P-E-E: state a Point, Explain it, then give an Example. For "is it better to study in long periods or short blocks?", give your point, explain why (short blocks aid concentration and memory), then an example (studying for 45 minutes then taking a break). Show both sides, and use conditionals (if students plan well, they…). P-E-E: মত, ব্যাখ্যা, উদাহরণ। দুই দিক দেখান; conditional ব্যবহার করুন।
