A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 17, Test 4, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 17, Test 4, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন। টাস্ক বিশ্লেষণ, কাঠামো, দরকারি ভাষা ও টিপস — আমাদের নিজের ভাষায়।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Shop Closures and Openings, 2011–2018 (Line Graph)
What the task shows: a line graph of the number of shops that closed and the number of new shops that opened in one country each year from 2011 to 2018 (two lines, in thousands). Your job: select and report the main features, describe the trends of each line, and make comparisons. টাস্কে যা আছে: এক দেশে ২০১১–২০১৮ সালে প্রতি বছর কতগুলো দোকান বন্ধ হয়েছে ও কতগুলো নতুন দোকান খুলেছে তার লাইন গ্রাফ (দুটি রেখা, হাজারে)। কাজ: প্রতিটি রেখার ধারা বর্ণনা ও তুলনা।

The key insight for your overview: closures generally stayed in the 5,000–7,000 range (with a dramatic dip in 2015), whereas openings showed a wider swing and an overall downward trend to their lowest point in 2018. Note where the two lines crossed and the biggest peaks/dips — but keep specific numbers for the body paragraphs.
ওভারভিউয়ের মূল কথা: বন্ধের সংখ্যা সাধারণত ৫,০০০–৭,০০০-এর মধ্যে (২০১৫-তে হঠাৎ কমে), আর খোলা বেশি ওঠানামা করে ২০১৮-তে সর্বনিম্নে নামে। দুটি রেখার ছেদবিন্দু ও সর্বোচ্চ/সর্বনিম্ন উল্লেখ করুন; সংখ্যা body-তে রাখুন।
Common mistakes with line graphs: (1) no overview; (2) describing every single year like a list; (3) forgetting to compare the two lines. Use the past simple (the data is historical), a range of movement verbs (rose, plunged, rebounded, levelled off), and mention the key crossover point.
লাইন গ্রাফে সাধারণ ভুল: ওভারভিউ না থাকা; প্রতি বছর তালিকার মতো লেখা; দুই রেখা তুলনা না করা। past simple ও নানা গতি-ক্রিয়া ব্যবহার করুন।
Task 2: More People Are Trying Alternative Medicine
The prompt (in short): "Nowadays, a growing number of people with health problems are trying alternative medicines and treatments instead of visiting their usual doctor. Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?" This is a positive/negative opinion essay: take a clear stance and defend it. প্রশ্ন (সংক্ষেপে): "আজকাল অনেক মানুষ স্বাস্থ্য-সমস্যায় সাধারণ ডাক্তারের বদলে বিকল্প চিকিৎসা নিচ্ছে। এটি ইতিবাচক না নেতিবাচক?" এটি ইতিবাচক/নেতিবাচক মতামত রচনা: স্পষ্ট অবস্থান নিন।

Positive
- Often cheaper and more accessible than a doctor. সস্তা ও সহজলভ্য।
- Usually natural, with fewer side effects. প্রাকৃতিক, কম পার্শ্বপ্রতিক্রিয়া।
- Can complement conventional care and reduce stress. মূল চিকিৎসার পরিপূরক।
Negative
- Many treatments lack scientific proof. বৈজ্ঞানিক প্রমাণের অভাব।
- Delaying real treatment can be dangerous. প্রকৃত চিকিৎসায় বিলম্ব বিপজ্জনক।
- Practitioners may be untrained or unregulated. অপ্রশিক্ষিত/অনিয়ন্ত্রিত।
A strong line: it is largely negative when alternative treatments replace proven medicine for serious conditions, but positive as a complement for minor problems or stress — the danger is avoiding a doctor for something serious. Support each point with a specific example. শক্তিশালী অবস্থান: গুরুতর রোগে প্রমাণিত চিকিৎসার বদলে নিলে মূলত নেতিবাচক, তবে ছোট সমস্যায় পরিপূরক হিসেবে ইতিবাচক। প্রতিটি পয়েন্টে উদাহরণ দিন।
