How to Use This Companion (এই গাইড কীভাবে ব্যবহার করবেন)
A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 18, Test 4, Writing. Writing has no single correct answer, so this page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 18, Test 4, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন। এখানে টাস্ক বিশ্লেষণ, কাঠামো, দরকারি ভাষা ও টিপস — আমাদের নিজের ভাষায়। বইয়ের টাস্ক বা নমুনা রচনা হুবহু ছাপা হয়নি।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Monthly Change in Metal Prices (2014)
What the task shows: a line graph of the average monthly change (percentage compared with the previous month) in the prices of three metals — copper, nickel and zinc — during 2014. Your job: select the main features and make comparisons. টাস্কে যা আছে: ২০১৪ জুড়ে তিনটি ধাতুর (তামা, নিকেল, দস্তা) দামের গড় মাসিক পরিবর্তনের (আগের মাসের তুলনায় শতাংশ) লাইন গ্রাফ। কাজ: মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য বেছে বর্ণনা ও তুলনা।

The key insight for your overview: this graph shows the rate of change, not the actual price. All three metals fell (a dip) around June, stayed low or flat mid-year, and rose again towards December. Stating this shared pattern — high start, mid-year dip, year-end recovery — secures Band 6+.
ওভারভিউয়ের মূল কথা: এটি দামের নয়, পরিবর্তনের হার দেখায়। তিন ধাতুই জুনের দিকে কমে, মাঝ-বছরে নিচু/স্থির থাকে, ডিসেম্বরের দিকে আবার বাড়ে। এই যৌথ ধরন বললে Band 6+।
Common mistakes: (1) writing "the price rose" when it is the change that rose — say "prices rose more slowly" or "the rate of increase fell"; (2) no overview; (3) describing every month. Note negative values = the price fell that month. Use past tense.
সাধারণ ভুল: এটি "পরিবর্তন", দাম নয় — সাবধানে লিখুন; ওভারভিউ দিন; প্রতিটি মাস আলাদা লিখবেন না। ঋণাত্মক মান = ঐ মাসে দাম কমেছে।
Task 2: An Ageing Population (Advantages vs Disadvantages)
The prompt (in short): people are living longer; some say an ageing population creates problems for governments, others think there are benefits. To what extent do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? This is an advantages/disadvantages (opinion) essay: weigh both sides and give a clear judgement. প্রশ্ন (সংক্ষেপে): মানুষ বেশিদিন বাঁচছে; বার্ধক্যপ্রধান জনসংখ্যা কারো মতে সমস্যা, কারো মতে উপকারী। সুবিধা কি অসুবিধাকে ছাড়িয়ে যায়? দুই দিক ওজন করে স্পষ্ট মত দিন।

- Higher pension and healthcare costs. পেনশন ও স্বাস্থ্য খরচ বাড়ে।
- A smaller working-age population pays more tax. কর্মক্ষম জনসংখ্যা কমে।
- Pressure on housing and jobs for the young. তরুণদের চাপ।
Advantages
- Older people offer wisdom, experience and skills. অভিজ্ঞতা ও দক্ষতা।
- Many work longer and volunteer or do charity. বেশিদিন কাজ ও স্বেচ্ছাসেবা।
- Grandparents care for children so parents can work. নাতি-নাতনির দেখভাল।
Whichever side you argue, be consistent from the introduction to the conclusion. A common strong line: the challenges are real but manageable, and the contributions of older people mean the benefits outweigh them. Support each point with an example. যে দিকই বেছে নিন, ভূমিকা থেকে উপসংহার পর্যন্ত সঙ্গতি রাখুন। উদাহরণ দিন।
