A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 2, Test 1, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 2, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Consumer Durables Owned in Britain, 1972–1983 (Table)
What the task shows: a table giving the percentage of households in Britain that owned various consumer durables (such as a car, a fridge, a washing machine, a telephone, central heating, a dishwasher, a video) at several points between 1972 and 1983. Summarise the main features and make comparisons; do not give opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: একটি টেবিল—১৯৭২–১৯৮৩-এ ব্রিটেনের কত শতাংশ পরিবার নানা টেকসই ভোগ্যপণ্য (গাড়ি, ফ্রিজ, ওয়াশিং মেশিন, টেলিফোন, সেন্ট্রাল হিটিং, ডিশওয়াশার, ভিডিও) রাখত। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা দিন; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Nearly all items rose over the period. প্রায় সবই বেড়েছে।
- Already-common items (fridge, car) rose only a little. প্রচলিত পণ্য কম বেড়েছে।
- Newer items (telephone, central heating) rose fastest. নতুন পণ্য দ্রুত বেড়েছে।
- Luxury items (dishwasher) stayed low. বিলাস পণ্য কম রইল।
Overview to aim for: ownership of almost every durable increased between 1972 and 1983; the biggest rises were in items that started less common, while goods that were already widespread grew only slightly and luxuries remained least owned. ওভারভিউ: ১৯৭২–৮৩-এ প্রায় সব পণ্যের মালিকানা বেড়েছে; কম-প্রচলিত পণ্যে বৃদ্ধি সবচেয়ে বেশি, প্রচলিত পণ্যে সামান্য, বিলাস পণ্য সবচেয়ে কম।
Tips: use past tenses, quote start/end percentages, and group items (fast-rising vs. flat) rather than listing every number. অতীত কাল; শুরু/শেষ শতাংশ; পণ্য দলবদ্ধ করুন।
Task 2: Should Fatherhood Be Emphasised as Much as Motherhood?
The prompt (in short): some people say that the importance of fatherhood ought to be emphasised as much as motherhood, because a child needs both parents. To what extent do you agree or disagree? An opinion (agree/disagree) essay. প্রশ্ন: কেউ বলে পিতৃত্বকে মাতৃত্বের মতোই গুরুত্ব দেওয়া উচিত, কারণ শিশুর দুই বাবা-মা-ই দরকার। কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? মতামত রচনা।

Emphasise fatherhood equally
- Children benefit from both parents. দুই বাবা-মায়ের উপকার।

Other considerations
- Work patterns can limit fathers' time. কাজের সময়ের সীমা।
- Roles may differ by family/culture. পরিবার/সংস্কৃতিভেদে ভিন্ন।
- What matters is care, not the parent's sex. যত্নই আসল।
A strong answer takes a clear stance — for example, that both parents' roles deserve equal emphasis — while acknowledging that circumstances vary. State how far you agree. স্পষ্ট অবস্থান নিন—যেমন দুই ভূমিকাই সমান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ—তবে পরিস্থিতি ভিন্ন হতে পারে তা মানুন।
