A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 2, Test 3, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.

Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: UK Residents' Visits Abroad, 1994–98 (Two Tables)
What the task shows: two tables. The first gives the number of visits abroad by UK residents by purpose of visit (for example holidays, business, visiting friends/relatives) from 1994 to 1998; the second gives the destinations of those visits by main region (such as Western Europe, North America, other areas). Summarise the main features and make comparisons; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: দুটি টেবিল। প্রথমটি ১৯৯৪–৯৮-এ যুক্তরাজ্যের বাসিন্দাদের উদ্দেশ্য অনুযায়ী বিদেশ-সফর (ছুটি, ব্যবসা, বন্ধু/আত্মীয়) দেখায়; দ্বিতীয়টি মূল অঞ্চল অনুযায়ী গন্তব্য (পশ্চিম ইউরোপ, উত্তর আমেরিকা, অন্যান্য)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Total visits abroad rose over the five years. মোট সফর বেড়েছে।
- Holidays were the main purpose. ছুটি প্রধান।
- Western Europe was the top destination. পশ্চিম ইউরোপ শীর্ষে।
- Link the two tables in your overview. দুই টেবিল যুক্ত করুন।
Overview to aim for: UK residents made steadily more trips abroad from 1994 to 1998, mostly for holidays, and the great majority of these visits were to Western Europe. Cover both tables. ওভারভিউ: ১৯৯৪–৯৮-এ যুক্তরাজ্যের বাসিন্দারা ক্রমশ বেশি বিদেশ-সফর করেছে, মূলত ছুটিতে, ও বেশির ভাগ গন্তব্য পশ্চিম ইউরোপ। দুই টেবিলই ছুঁয়ে যান।
Tips: use past tenses, quote start/end figures, and group purposes/regions rather than listing every cell. অতীত কাল; শুরু/শেষ সংখ্যা; দলবদ্ধ করুন।
Task 2: Is Capital Punishment Essential to Control Violence?
The prompt (in short): some argue that without capital punishment (the death penalty) our lives are less secure and violent crime increases, so it is essential to control violence in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree? An opinion (agree/disagree) essay on a sensitive topic. প্রশ্ন: কেউ বলে মৃত্যুদণ্ড ছাড়া আমাদের জীবন কম নিরাপদ ও সহিংস অপরাধ বাড়ে, তাই তা সমাজে সহিংসতা নিয়ন্ত্রণে অপরিহার্য। কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? একটি সংবেদনশীল বিষয়ে মতামত রচনা।

Argument "for"
- Claimed to deter the worst crimes. অপরাধ নিরুৎসাহিত।
- Seen by some as justice for victims. ন্যায়বিচার।
- Removes dangerous offenders permanently. স্থায়ী অপসারণ।
Argument "against"
- Risk of executing the innocent. নিরপরাধের ঝুঁকি।
- Little proof it actually deters. প্রমাণ দুর্বল।
- Rehabilitation and prevention are better. সংশোধন ভালো।
On sensitive topics, stay balanced and objective, support claims with reasons, and state your own position clearly. Avoid emotional or extreme language. সংবেদনশীল বিষয়ে ভারসাম্য রাখুন, যুক্তি দিন, নিজের অবস্থান স্পষ্ট করুন; আবেগঘন ভাষা এড়ান।
