A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 2, Test 4, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 2, Test 4, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Imprisonment in Five Countries, 1930–1980 (Bar Chart)
What the task shows: a bar chart giving the figures for imprisonment (the number of people in prison, in thousands) in five countries — Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada — at points between 1930 and 1980. Write a report describing the information; summarise the main features and make comparisons, without opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: ১৯৩০–১৯৮০-এ পাঁচ দেশে কারাবন্দির সংখ্যা (হাজারে) দেখানো বার চার্ট — গ্রেট ব্রিটেন, অস্ট্রেলিয়া, নিউজিল্যান্ড, যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও কানাডা। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা দিন; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- The USA had the highest figures throughout. যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সর্বোচ্চ।
- Trends varied — some rose, some fell then rose. প্রবণতা ভিন্ন।
- New Zealand / Australia stayed relatively low. নিউজিল্যান্ড/অস্ট্রেলিয়া কম।
- Compare the countries, don't list every bar. দেশ-তুলনা করুন।
Overview to aim for: the United States recorded by far the largest prison numbers across the whole period, while the other four countries had much lower figures that changed in different ways between 1930 and 1980. ওভারভিউ: পুরো সময়কালে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের কারাবন্দি সংখ্যা অনেক বেশি; বাকি চার দেশের সংখ্যা অনেক কম এবং ভিন্নভাবে বদলেছে।
Tips: use past tenses, quote figures in thousands, and note both the highest/lowest and any clear rise or fall. অতীত কাল; হাজারে সংখ্যা; সর্বোচ্চ/সর্বনিম্ন ও বৃদ্ধি/পতন।
Task 2: Do Working Mothers Cause Youth Problems?
The prompt (in short): the position of women in society has changed greatly in the last twenty years, and some claim that problems young people now face — such as juvenile delinquency — arise because many married women now work and are not at home to care for their children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? An opinion (agree/disagree) essay. প্রশ্ন: গত বিশ বছরে সমাজে নারীর অবস্থান অনেক বদলেছে; কেউ বলে তরুণদের সমস্যা—যেমন কিশোর অপরাধ—ঘটে কারণ অনেক বিবাহিত নারী এখন কাজ করেন ও সন্তানের যত্নে ঘরে থাকেন না। কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? মতামত রচনা।

Supports the claim
- Less parental supervision at home. কম তত্ত্বাবধান।
- Children may lack guidance/routine. দিকনির্দেশ কম।
Challenges the claim
- Delinquency has many causes (poverty, peers, schooling). অনেক কারণ।
- Blaming only mothers is unfair and outdated. শুধু মায়েদের দোষ নয়।
- Fathers and society share responsibility. সবার দায়িত্ব।
A strong answer usually disagrees, at least partly: youth problems have complex causes and cannot be blamed on working mothers alone. Make your position clear and support it. শক্ত উত্তর সাধারণত অন্তত আংশিক দ্বিমত: তরুণদের সমস্যার কারণ জটিল, কেবল কর্মজীবী মায়েদের দোষ নয়।
