How to Use This Companion (এই গাইড কীভাবে ব্যবহার করবেন)
A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 20, Test 1, Writing. Writing has no single correct answer, so this page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 20, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন। Writing-এ একটিমাত্র সঠিক উত্তর নেই, তাই এখানে টাস্ক বিশ্লেষণ, কাঠামো ও পরিকল্পনা, দরকারি ভাষা ও টিপস — আমাদের নিজের ভাষায়। বইয়ের টাস্ক বা নমুনা রচনা হুবহু ছাপা হয়নি।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much — never let Task 1 eat its time.
সময়: Task 1-এ ~২০ মিনিট (১৫০+ শব্দ), Task 2-এ ~৪০ মিনিট (২৫০+ শব্দ)। Task 2-এর ওজন দ্বিগুণ।
Task 1: Population Tables (New York City)
What the task shows: tables of population figures for New York City and its districts (Manhattan vs the other districts) across the years 1800, 1900 and 2000, including each area's share (%) of the total. Your job: select and report the main features and make comparisons. টাস্কে যা আছে: নিউইয়র্ক শহর ও এর এলাকাগুলোর (Manhattan বনাম অন্যান্য) ১৮০০, ১৯০০, ২০০০ সালের জনসংখ্যার টেবিল, শতকরা হারসহ। কাজ: মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য বেছে বর্ণনা ও তুলনা।

The key insight to put in your overview: the city's total population grew enormously over the two centuries, and — crucially — Manhattan's share of that total fell steeply while the other districts' share rose. Stating this big-picture shift (without numbers) is what secures Band 6+ in Task Achievement.
ওভারভিউয়ে মূল কথা: দুই শতকে মোট জনসংখ্যা বিপুল বেড়েছে, এবং Manhattan-এর অংশ কমেছে যখন অন্য এলাকার অংশ বেড়েছে। সংখ্যা ছাড়া এই বড় ছবি বলাই Task Achievement-এ Band 6+ নিশ্চিত করে।
Common mistakes: (1) no overview; (2) listing every number with no comparison; (3) forgetting the data covers the past, so use past tenses. Group the years to compare — don't write one sentence per cell.
সাধারণ ভুল: ওভারভিউ না থাকা; শুধু সংখ্যা তালিকা; অতীত কাল ভুলে যাওয়া। বছরগুলো গুচ্ছবদ্ধ করে তুলনা করুন।
Task 2: Should clean water be free? (Agree/Disagree)
The prompt (in short): since access to clean water is a basic human right, every home should have a water supply that is free of charge — do you agree or disagree? This is an opinion essay: you must take a clear position and defend it throughout. প্রশ্ন (সংক্ষেপে): পরিষ্কার পানি মৌলিক অধিকার, তাই প্রতিটি বাড়িতে বিনামূল্যে পানি সরবরাহ থাকা উচিত — একমত না দ্বিমত? এটি মতামত রচনা: স্পষ্ট অবস্থান নিয়ে সারা লেখায় ধরে রাখুন।

For "free water"
- Water is essential to survival, not a luxury. বাঁচার জন্য অপরিহার্য।
- Free access protects public health and the poor. জনস্বাস্থ্য ও দরিদ্র রক্ষা।
- A basic amount could be free, extra use paid. মৌলিক ফ্রি, বেশি ব্যবহারে টাকা।
Against / caution
- Cleaning & delivering water costs money. পরিশোধন-সরবরাহে খরচ।
- Totally free supply may cause waste. অপচয় হতে পারে।
- Governments need funds to maintain the system. রক্ষণাবেক্ষণে তহবিল লাগে।
A strong, nuanced position often scores best — e.g. "a basic amount should be free, but heavy use should be charged to prevent waste." Support each idea with a specific example. সূক্ষ্ম অবস্থান প্রায়ই ভালো স্কোর করে; প্রতিটি ধারণা নির্দিষ্ট উদাহরণ দিয়ে সমর্থন করুন।
