A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 3, Test 1, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 3, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Japanese Tourists Abroad & Australia's Share (Bar Chart + Line Graph)
What the task shows: two visuals for 1985–1995. A bar chart gives the number of Japanese tourists travelling abroad (in millions), and a line graph shows Australia's share of the Japanese tourist market (as a percentage). Summarise the main features and make comparisons; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: ১৯৮৫–১৯৯৫-এর দুটি চিত্র। একটি বার চার্ট বিদেশ-ভ্রমণকারী জাপানি পর্যটকের সংখ্যা (মিলিয়নে) দেখায়; একটি লাইন গ্রাফ জাপানি পর্যটক-বাজারে অস্ট্রেলিয়ার অংশ (শতাংশে) দেখায়। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Both rose overall across the decade. দুটোই বেড়েছে।
- Japanese tourists abroad roughly tripled (about 5m → 15m). প্রায় তিন গুণ।
- Australia's share climbed to about 6%, with a small dip around 1989. অস্ট্রেলিয়ার অংশ ~৬%, ১৯৮৯-এ সামান্য পতন।
Overview to aim for: both the total number of Japanese travelling abroad and Australia's share of that market grew strongly over the period, despite a brief dip in Australia's share near 1989. Cover both visuals. ওভারভিউ: জাপানিদের বিদেশযাত্রা ও অস্ট্রেলিয়ার বাজার-অংশ—দুটোই সময়কালে জোরালোভাবে বেড়েছে, যদিও ১৯৮৯-এর কাছে অস্ট্রেলিয়ার অংশে সংক্ষিপ্ত পতন। দুই চিত্রই ছুঁয়ে যান।
Tips: use past tenses (data ends 1995), quote start/end figures, and note the dip. অতীত কাল; শুরু/শেষ সংখ্যা; পতন উল্লেখ করুন।
Task 2: Do International Sporting Events Ease Tensions?
The prompt (in short): popular events like the football World Cup and other international sporting occasions are essential in easing international tensions and releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way. To what extent do you agree or disagree? An opinion (agree/disagree) essay. প্রশ্ন: ফুটবল বিশ্বকাপের মতো আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রীড়া-আসর আন্তর্জাতিক উত্তেজনা কমাতে ও দেশপ্রেমের আবেগ নিরাপদে প্রকাশে অপরিহার্য। কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? মতামত রচনা।

Sport eases tension
- Brings nations together peacefully. শান্তিপূর্ণ মিলন।

Sport can divide
- Rivalry can spill into hostility/violence. প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা সহিংসতায়।

A balanced view: sport can help release emotions safely and build goodwill, but it is not automatically peaceful — outcomes depend on how it is organised.
