A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 3, Test 2, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 3, Test 2, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Spending on Consumer Goods (Bar Chart)
What the task shows: a bar chart comparing the amount spent (in thousand pounds sterling) on six consumer goods — personal stereos, tennis racquets, perfumes, CDs, toys and photographic film — in four European countries: Germany, Italy, France and Britain. Summarise the main features and make comparisons; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: চারটি ইউরোপীয় দেশে (Germany, Italy, France, Britain) ছয়টি ভোগ্যপণ্যে (personal stereos, tennis racquets, perfumes, CDs, toys, photographic film) ব্যয় (হাজার পাউন্ডে) তুলনা করা বার চার্ট। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Britain generally spent the most on most goods. Britain বেশি ব্যয় করে।
- Photographic film & toys attracted high spending. ফিল্ম ও খেলনায় বেশি।
- Differences between countries are fairly small for some items. কিছু পণ্যে পার্থক্য কম।
Overview to aim for: Britain tended to spend the most across the goods, while the four countries were fairly close for some items; photographic film and toys drew the highest spending overall. Group the highest and lowest rather than listing every bar. ওভারভিউ: Britain সাধারণত বেশি ব্যয় করে; কিছু পণ্যে চার দেশ কাছাকাছি; ফিল্ম ও খেলনায় সর্বোচ্চ। সর্বোচ্চ-সর্বনিম্ন গ্রুপ করে লিখুন।
Tips: compare countries item by item where the gap is clear, and use "the same amount / roughly equal" where bars are close. স্পষ্ট পার্থক্যে তুলনা; কাছাকাছি হলে "প্রায় সমান"।
Task 2: Does Technology Kill Traditional Skills?
The prompt (in short): "When a country develops its technology, the traditional skills and ways of life die out. It is pointless to try and keep them alive." To what extent do you agree or disagree? An opinion (agree/disagree) essay. প্রশ্ন: "কোনো দেশ প্রযুক্তি উন্নত করলে ঐতিহ্যগত দক্ষতা ও জীবনধারা হারিয়ে যায়; সেগুলো বাঁচিয়ে রাখার চেষ্টা অর্থহীন।" কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? মতামত রচনা।

Change is natural

A balanced view: technology naturally changes ways of life, but it is not "pointless" to preserve valuable traditions — many can survive alongside modern life. Make your position clear. ভারসাম্য: প্রযুক্তি জীবনধারা বদলায়, তবে মূল্যবান ঐতিহ্য রক্ষা "অর্থহীন" নয়—অনেকটাই আধুনিক জীবনের পাশে টিকতে পারে। অবস্থান স্পষ্ট করুন।
