A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 3, Test 3, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 3, Test 3, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Education & Science by Country Type (Bar Charts)
What the task shows: three bar charts comparing developing and industrialised countries in 1980 and 1990 — the average years of schooling, the number of scientists and technicians (per 1,000 people), and spending on research & development (in US$ billions). Summarise the main features and make comparisons; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: ১৯৮০ ও ১৯৯০-এ উন্নয়নশীল ও শিল্পোন্নত দেশের তুলনায় তিনটি বার চার্ট — গড় স্কুলিং বছর, বিজ্ঞানী/প্রযুক্তিবিদ (প্রতি ১,০০০ জনে), ও গবেষণা-উন্নয়ন ব্যয় (বিলিয়ন ডলারে)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Industrialised countries led on every measure. শিল্পোন্নত দেশ এগিয়ে।
- Both groups rose in schooling and scientists from 1980 to 1990. দুই দলেই বৃদ্ধি।
- R&D spending shows the biggest gap and even fell in developing countries. R&D-তে বড় ব্যবধান।
Overview to aim for: industrialised countries were far ahead on all three measures, and the gap was widest for research spending; both groups improved on schooling and scientist numbers over the decade. Cover all three charts. ওভারভিউ: তিন সূচকেই শিল্পোন্নত দেশ অনেক এগিয়ে, গবেষণা-ব্যয়ে ব্যবধান সর্বোচ্চ; স্কুলিং ও বিজ্ঞানী-সংখ্যায় উভয় দলই উন্নত। তিন চার্টই ছুঁয়ে যান।
Tips: compare the two country groups and the two years; note the widening R&D gap. দুই দল ও দুই বছর তুলনা; R&D ব্যবধান।
Task 2: Should Children Do Paid Work?
The prompt (in short): in many countries children do some kind of paid work. Some think this is completely wrong; others see it as valuable work experience, important for learning and taking responsibility. What are your opinions? An opinion / discussion essay. প্রশ্ন: অনেক দেশে শিশুরা কোনো না কোনো বেতনভুক্ত কাজ করে। কেউ মনে করে এটি একেবারে ভুল; কেউ মূল্যবান কর্ম-অভিজ্ঞতা—শেখা ও দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। আপনার মত কী? মতামত/আলোচনা রচনা।

Serious risks
- May harm health or interrupt schooling. স্বাস্থ্য/পড়াশোনার ক্ষতি।

- Childhood should be protected. শৈশব রক্ষা।
A balanced view: light, safe, part-time work can teach responsibility, but only if it does not harm health or education — full-time or exploitative child labour is wrong. State your position clearly. ভারসাম্য: হালকা, নিরাপদ, খণ্ডকালীন কাজ দায়িত্ব শেখাতে পারে, তবে স্বাস্থ্য/শিক্ষার ক্ষতি না করলে; পূর্ণকালীন/শোষণমূলক শিশুশ্রম ভুল। অবস্থান স্পষ্ট করুন।
