A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 4, Test 1, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 4, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Families Living in Poverty in Australia (Table)
What the task shows: a table giving the proportion (percentage and number) of people in different household types living in poverty in Australia in 1999 — for example single aged people, aged couples, single people with no children, couples with no children, sole parents and couples with children, plus an "all households" figure. What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Sole parents and single people had the highest poverty rates (around one in five). একক অভিভাবক ও একক—সর্বোচ্চ হার।
- Aged couples had the lowest rate. বয়স্ক দম্পতি—সর্বনিম্ন।
- Percentage ≠ number: couples with children had a lower rate but the largest total number. শতাংশ ≠ সংখ্যা।
Overview to aim for: poverty was most common among sole parents and single people, and least common among aged couples; but because of group size, couples with children made up the biggest number of people in poverty. ওভারভিউ: একক অভিভাবক ও একক ব্যক্তির মধ্যে দারিদ্র্য বেশি, বয়স্ক দম্পতির মধ্যে কম; তবে দলের আকারের কারণে সন্তানসহ দম্পতির সংখ্যা সর্বোচ্চ।
Tips: compare highest and lowest, and clearly separate percentages from totals. Do not list every row — group similar ones. সর্বোচ্চ-সর্বনিম্ন তুলনা; শতাংশ ও মোট আলাদা রাখুন।
Task 2: Comparing Media for Communicating Information
The prompt (in short): compare the advantages and disadvantages of three of these media for communicating information — comics, books, radio, television, film and theatre — and say which you think is most effective. A discussion + opinion essay. প্রশ্ন: তথ্য যোগাযোগের মাধ্যম হিসেবে comics, books, radio, television, film, theatre—এর মধ্যে তিনটি বেছে সুবিধা-অসুবিধা তুলনা করুন এবং কোনটি সবচেয়ে কার্যকর তা বলুন। আলোচনা + মতামত রচনা।

Strengths
- TV/film: reach a huge audience; images + sound. বিশাল দর্শক; ছবি+শব্দ।
- Books: deep detail; kept and re-read. গভীর তথ্য; বারবার পড়া।
- Radio: cheap, portable, works while busy. সস্তা ও বহনযোগ্য।
Weaknesses
- TV/film: costly to make; can oversimplify. ব্যয়বহুল; সরলীকরণ।
- Books: slow; need literacy and time. ধীর; পড়ার দক্ষতা লাগে।
- Radio/comics: no visuals / limited depth. ছবি নেই / সীমিত গভীরতা।
Pick three you can develop well, give a balanced advantage and disadvantage for each, then commit to one as "most effective" with a clear reason. তিনটি বাছুন; প্রতিটির সুবিধা ও অসুবিধা দিন; একটিকে "সবচেয়ে কার্যকর" বলুন স্পষ্ট কারণসহ।
