A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 4, Test 3, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 4, Test 3, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Post-School Qualifications by Gender (Bar Chart)
What the task shows: a bar chart giving the proportion of men and women in Australia who held different levels of post-school qualification in 1999 — for example skilled vocational diploma, undergraduate diploma, bachelor's degree, postgraduate diploma and master's degree. Summarise the main features and compare the sexes; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: ১৯৯৯ সালে অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় বিভিন্ন স্তরের স্কুল-পরবর্তী যোগ্যতা কত শতাংশ পুরুষ ও নারী রাখতেন তা দেখানো বার চার্ট — skilled vocational diploma, undergraduate diploma, bachelor's degree, postgraduate diploma, master's degree। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও নারী-পুরুষ তুলনা; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Men dominated skilled vocational diplomas and postgraduate diplomas. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে পুরুষ এগিয়ে।
- Women led in undergraduate diplomas (and were close in bachelor's). কিছুতে নারী এগিয়ে।
- The gap is very large in some categories, small in others. ব্যবধান স্থানভেদে ভিন্ন।
Overview to aim for: men held a clear majority of the vocational and postgraduate diplomas, while women were ahead at undergraduate-diploma level; the sexes were more balanced for bachelor's and master's degrees. Group the male-led and female-led categories. ওভারভিউ: ভোকেশনাল ও পোস্টগ্র্যাজুয়েট ডিপ্লোমায় পুরুষ বেশি, আন্ডারগ্র্যাজুয়েট ডিপ্লোমায় নারী; ব্যাচেলর ও মাস্টার্সে ভারসাম্য। দল করে লিখুন।
Tips: use comparison language (twice as many, far fewer) and quote the widest and narrowest gaps. তুলনার ভাষা ও সবচেয়ে বড়/ছোট ব্যবধান উল্লেখ করুন।
Task 2: Should Creative Artists Have Total Freedom?
The prompt (in short): creative artists should always be free to express their ideas — in words, pictures, music or film — however they wish, with no government restrictions. To what extent do you agree or disagree? An opinion (agree/disagree) essay. প্রশ্ন: সৃজনশীল শিল্পীরা—কথা, ছবি, সংগীত বা চলচ্চিত্রে—নিজের ভাব যেভাবে খুশি প্রকাশে সবসময় স্বাধীন থাকা উচিত, সরকারি কোনো নিষেধাজ্ঞা নয়। কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? মতামত রচনা।

For freedom
- Art challenges ideas and drives progress. শিল্প ভাবনা নাড়ায়।
- Censorship can be misused by those in power. সেন্সরশিপ অপব্যবহার হয়।
- Free expression is a basic right. মুক্ত প্রকাশ মৌলিক অধিকার।
For some limits
- Some content may incite hatred or violence. ঘৃণা/সহিংসতা ছড়াতে পারে।
- Protecting children and public decency. শিশু ও শালীনতা রক্ষা।
- Respecting religious and cultural sensitivities. ধর্মীয়/সাংস্কৃতিক সংবেদনশীলতা।
A balanced view: artistic freedom should be strongly protected, but a few reasonable limits (against inciting harm) are acceptable. Make your own position clear and consistent. ভারসাম্য: শিল্পের স্বাধীনতা রক্ষা হোক, তবে ক্ষতি উসকানোর বিরুদ্ধে কিছু যুক্তিসঙ্গত সীমা গ্রহণযোগ্য। নিজ অবস্থান স্পষ্ট রাখুন।
