A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 5, Test 1, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 5, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Proportion of Population Aged 65+ (Line Graph)
What the task shows: a line graph giving the percentage of the population aged 65 and over in three countries — Japan, Sweden and the USA — from 1940 to 2040 (some figures are projections). Summarise the main features and make comparisons; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: ১৯৪০–২০৪০ সময়ে তিন দেশে (Japan, Sweden, USA) ৬৫+ বয়সী জনসংখ্যার শতাংশ দেখানো একটি লাইন গ্রাফ (কিছু ভবিষ্যৎ অনুমান)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- All three rise overall, especially toward 2040. সবাই বাড়ছে, বিশেষত ২০৪০-এ।
- Sweden and the USA start higher and rise fairly steadily. Sweden ও USA আগে থেকে বেশি।
- Japan starts lowest and even dips, then climbs very sharply after 2030 to overtake the others. Japan শুরুতে সর্বনিম্ন, পরে দ্রুত বেড়ে ছাড়িয়ে যায়।
Overview to aim for: the elderly share of the population is projected to grow in all three countries, but Japan's rise after 2030 is the most dramatic, ending highest. Group the two steadier lines and contrast Japan. ওভারভিউ: তিন দেশেই বয়স্কের অনুপাত বাড়বে, তবে ২০৩০-এর পর Japan-এর বৃদ্ধি সবচেয়ে নাটকীয়, শেষে সর্বোচ্চ। দুটো স্থির লাইন গ্রুপ করে Japan-কে আলাদা করুন।
Tips: use past tenses for years up to now and future forms for projections; quote key figures and the crossover point. অতীত ও ভবিষ্যৎ কাল; মূল সংখ্যা ও ছেদবিন্দু।
Task 2: Equal Numbers of Male and Female Students?
The prompt (in short): universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree? An opinion (agree/disagree) essay. প্রশ্ন: বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রতিটি বিষয়ে সমান সংখ্যক নারী ও পুরুষ শিক্ষার্থী নেওয়া উচিত। কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? মতামত রচনা।

For equal numbers
- Promotes fairness and balance. ন্যায্যতা ও ভারসাম্য।
- Breaks stereotypes in some subjects. প্রথা ভাঙে।
- Mixed classes benefit learning. মিশ্র শ্রেণি ভালো।
Against (merit-based)
- Places should go by ability, not gender. যোগ্যতায় ভর্তি।
- Fixed quotas may reject better applicants. কোটা যোগ্যকে বাদ দেয়।
- Interest naturally varies by subject. আগ্রহ ভিন্ন।
A common view: admission should mainly be on merit, while universities encourage under-represented groups to apply — so rigid equal quotas may be unfair. State how far you agree. সাধারণ মত: মূলত যোগ্যতায় ভর্তি, তবে কম-প্রতিনিধিত্বকারী দলকে উৎসাহ দেওয়া উচিত — কঠোর সমান কোটা অন্যায্য হতে পারে। কতটা একমত তা বলুন।
