A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 5, Test 2, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 5, Test 2, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Reasons for Study & Employer Support (Bar Charts)
What the task shows: two bar charts. The first shows the main reasons for studying (for career or for interest) among students of different age groups (under 26, 26–29, 30–39, 40–49, over 49). The second shows the level of employer support (time off and help with fees) by age group. Summarise the main features and make comparisons; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: দুটি বার চার্ট। প্রথম — বিভিন্ন বয়সের শিক্ষার্থীদের পড়ার মূল কারণ (career না interest)। দ্বিতীয় — বয়স অনুযায়ী নিয়োগকর্তার সহায়তা (সময় ও ফি সাহায্য)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Younger students mostly study for their career. তরুণরা career-এর জন্য।
- Older students (over 49) mostly study for interest. বয়স্করা আগ্রহে।
- Employer support is highest for the youngest and dips in the middle age groups. সমর্থন কমবেশি বয়সভেদে।
Overview to aim for: the reason for studying shifts from career to interest as students get older, while employer support is greatest for the youngest and least in the middle age groups. Describe the opposite trend across the first chart. ওভারভিউ: বয়স বাড়লে কারণ career থেকে interest-এ বদলায়; সমর্থন তরুণদের বেশি, মাঝবয়সে কম।
Tips: compare the two bars within each age group; quote a few key percentages; group ages, don't list every bar. প্রতি বয়সে দুই বার তুলনা; মূল শতাংশ; গ্রুপ করুন।
Task 2: A Gap Year Before University
The prompt (in short): in some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this. An advantages/disadvantages essay. প্রশ্ন: কিছু দেশে তরুণদের হাই স্কুল ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মাঝে এক বছর কাজ বা ভ্রমণে উৎসাহ দেওয়া হয়। এর সুবিধা ও অসুবিধা আলোচনা করুন।

Advantages
- Work experience, maturity and independence. অভিজ্ঞতা ও পরিপক্বতা।
- Earn money and save for study. টাকা সঞ্চয়।
- Travel broadens outlook and skills. ভ্রমণে দৃষ্টি বাড়ে।
Disadvantages
- May lose the habit of study. পড়ার অভ্যাস হারানো।
- Delays graduation and career. দেরি হয়।
- Cost or risk if poorly planned. খরচ/ঝুঁকি।
A balanced answer: a well-planned gap year builds valuable experience and funds, but an aimless one can delay study — so the outcome depends on how it is used. ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ উত্তর: সুপরিকল্পিত gap year অভিজ্ঞতা ও অর্থ দেয়, তবে লক্ষ্যহীন হলে দেরি হয় — ফলাফল ব্যবহারনির্ভর।
