A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 5, Test 3, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.

Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: A Town Map — Two Supermarket Sites
What the task shows: a map of the town of Garlsdon (population 65,000). A new supermarket (S) is planned, and the map shows two possible sites — S1 (on the edge, near housing and outside the town centre) and S2 (in the town centre, a no-traffic zone). It also marks nearby towns (Hindon, Bransdon, Cransdon), a railway and main roads. Describe the two options and compare them; no opinions. টাস্কে যা আছে: Garlsdon শহরের একটি মানচিত্র (জনসংখ্যা ৬৫,০০০)। নতুন সুপারমার্কেট (S)-এর দুটি সম্ভাব্য স্থান — S1 (প্রান্তে, আবাসিক এলাকার কাছে, কেন্দ্রের বাইরে) ও S2 (শহরকেন্দ্রে, no-traffic zone)। নিকটবর্তী শহর, রেলপথ ও প্রধান সড়কও আছে। দুটি বিকল্প বর্ণনা ও তুলনা করুন; মত নয়।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- S1 lies outside the centre, near housing and main roads/railway. S1 কেন্দ্রের বাইরে, আবাসিক ও সড়কের কাছে।
- S2 is in the central no-traffic zone. S2 কেন্দ্রীয় no-traffic এলাকায়।
- Distances to nearby towns (Hindon 12 km, Bransdon 16 km, Cransdon 25 km) affect access. নিকট শহরগুলোর দূরত্ব।
Overview to aim for: the town could put the supermarket either on the outskirts near housing and transport links (S1) or in the traffic-free centre (S2), each with clear access differences. Use compass and location language. ওভারভিউ: সুপারমার্কেট হয় প্রান্তে (S1) নয়তো কেন্দ্রে (S2) হতে পারে, প্রবেশগম্যতায় স্পষ্ট পার্থক্যসহ। দিক ও অবস্থানের ভাষা ব্যবহার করুন।
Tips: use location phrases (to the north of, on the outskirts, close to), the present tense, and compare the two sites rather than listing. অবস্থান-বাক্য, বর্তমান কাল; দুই স্থান তুলনা করুন।
Task 2: Competition or Co-operation for Children?
The prompt (in short): some people think a sense of competition in children should be encouraged; others believe children taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. A discussion (both views + opinion) essay. প্রশ্ন: কেউ মনে করে শিশুদের মধ্যে প্রতিযোগিতা উৎসাহিত করা উচিত; কেউ বলে সহযোগিতা শেখানো শিশুরা বড় হয়ে বেশি উপযোগী হয়। দুই মত আলোচনা ও নিজের মত।

Competition
- Drives effort and high standards. চেষ্টা বাড়ায়।

Co-operation

A balanced answer: healthy competition motivates children, but co-operation builds the teamwork most adults need — the best upbringing combines both. State your view clearly. ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ উত্তর: সুস্থ প্রতিযোগিতা প্রেরণা দেয়, তবে সহযোগিতা দলগত দক্ষতা গড়ে — সেরা লালন-পালনে দুটোই। মত স্পষ্ট করুন।
