A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 8, Test 1, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 8, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Causes of Land Degradation (Pie Chart + Table)
What the task shows: a pie chart giving the main causes of worldwide agricultural land degradation (over-grazing 35%, deforestation 30%, over-cultivation 28%, other 7%), plus a table showing how these causes affected three regions (North America, Europe, Oceania) in the 1990s. What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Over-grazing was the biggest single cause worldwide. অতিচারণ প্রধান কারণ।
- Europe lost the most land overall (23%), mainly to deforestation. ইউরোপে সবচেয়ে বেশি ক্ষতি।
- Oceania's degradation came mostly from over-grazing. Oceania-তে অতিচারণ প্রধান।
Overview to aim for: globally over-grazing and deforestation together caused most degradation, but the mix differed by region — Europe suffered the most (largely from deforestation and over-cultivation) while Oceania's loss was almost entirely from over-grazing. Task 2: Should Parents or Schools Teach Children to Be Good Citizens?
The prompt (in short): some people think parents should teach children how to be good members of society; others believe school is the place to learn this. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. A discussion (both views + opinion) essay. প্রশ্ন: কেউ মনে করেন সমাজের ভালো সদস্য হতে অভিভাবকরা শেখাবেন; অন্যরা বলেন স্কুল। দুই মত আলোচনা ও নিজের মত।

- Teach values and manners from birth. জন্ম থেকে মূল্যবোধ।
- Set an everyday example at home. প্রতিদিনের উদাহরণ।
- Know the child best. সন্তানকে ভালো চেনেন।
School
- Teaches cooperation and rules with peers. সহযোগিতা ও নিয়ম।
- Trained teachers and citizenship lessons. প্রশিক্ষিত শিক্ষক।

A balanced answer: both share the responsibility — parents lay the moral foundation at home while schools build on it through social interaction and formal lessons; the two work best together.
