A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 8, Test 2, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 8, Test 2, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Changes in UK School Spending (Pie Charts)
What the task shows: three pie charts giving the changes in annual spending by a particular UK school in 1981, 1991 and 2001, split into teachers' salaries, other workers' salaries, resources (e.g. books), furniture and equipment, and insurance. Summarise the main features and make comparisons. টাস্কে যা আছে: তিনটি পাই চার্ট — একটি UK স্কুলের বার্ষিক ব্যয়ের পরিবর্তন ১৯৮১, ১৯৯১, ২০০১-এ (শিক্ষকদের বেতন, অন্য কর্মীদের বেতন, সম্পদ/বই, আসবাব-সরঞ্জাম, বিমা)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Teachers' salaries were always the biggest cost (40% → 50% → 45%). শিক্ষকদের বেতন সর্বদা সর্বোচ্চ।
- Other workers' salaries fell steadily (28% → 22% → 15%). অন্য কর্মীদের বেতন কমেছে।
- Insurance rose sharply (2% → 3% → 8%); furniture & equipment fluctuated. বিমা বেড়েছে।
Overview to aim for: teachers' salaries remained the largest expense throughout, while spending on other staff fell steadily and insurance rose sharply; the other categories fluctuated. Group the steady trends and the fluctuations. ওভারভিউ: শিক্ষকদের বেতন সবসময় সর্বোচ্চ, অন্য কর্মীদের বেতন কমে, বিমা বাড়ে; বাকিগুলো ওঠানামা করে।
Chart tips: track each category across the three years rather than describing one chart at a time. Use change language (rose, fell, remained) and quote percentages. প্রতিটি বিভাগ তিন বছরে অনুসরণ করুন; পরিবর্তন-ভাষা ও শতাংশ।
Task 2: Technology and the Relationships People Make
The prompt (in short): the way many people interact has changed because of technology. In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make? Has this become a positive or negative development? A two-part (opinion) essay. প্রশ্ন: প্রযুক্তির কারণে মানুষের মিথস্ক্রিয়া বদলেছে — এটি সম্পর্কের ধরনে কীভাবে প্রভাব ফেলেছে, এবং তা ইতিবাচক না নেতিবাচক? দুই অংশের প্রবন্ধ।

Positive effects
- Keep in touch across distance. দূরত্বেও যোগাযোগ।
- Meet people with shared interests. অভিন্ন আগ্রহে পরিচয়।
- Faster, cheaper communication. দ্রুত ও সস্তা।
Negative effects
- Weaker face-to-face bonds. মুখোমুখি বন্ধন দুর্বল।
- Shallow or fake online relationships. অগভীর অনলাইন সম্পর্ক।
- Less privacy; screen addiction. গোপনীয়তা ও আসক্তি।
Answer both parts: first describe the changes (more online, long-distance and interest-based relationships), then give a clear verdict — for example, that the change is largely positive if technology supplements rather than replaces real contact. দুই অংশই দিন: আগে পরিবর্তন বর্ণনা (বেশি অনলাইন/দূরত্ব সম্পর্ক), পরে স্পষ্ট রায় — প্রযুক্তি বাস্তব যোগাযোগের পরিপূরক হলে বেশিরভাগ ইতিবাচক।
