How to Use This Companion (এই গাইড কীভাবে ব্যবহার করবেন)
A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 8, Test 3, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 8, Test 3, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Cement Production & Concrete (Process Diagrams)
What the task shows: two diagrams — one showing the stages and equipment used to make cement, and one showing how cement is combined with other materials to make concrete for building. Summarise the main features and compare where relevant. টাস্কে যা আছে: দুটি চিত্র — একটি সিমেন্ট তৈরির ধাপ ও সরঞ্জাম, অন্যটি সিমেন্টকে অন্য উপাদানের সঙ্গে মিশিয়ে কংক্রিট তৈরি। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Cement: limestone + clay → crusher → mixer → rotating heater → grinder → cement in bags. সিমেন্ট ধাপে ধাপে।
- Concrete: mix cement (15%), water (10%), sand (25%) and gravel (50%) in a concrete mixer. কংক্রিটের অনুপাত।
- Linear vs mixing: cement is a sequence; concrete is a single combining step. ক্রম বনাম মিশ্রণ।
Overview to aim for: cement is produced through a linear series of steps that crush, heat and grind raw materials, whereas concrete is made in a single stage by mixing cement with water, sand and gravel in fixed proportions. Describe the two processes in order. ওভারভিউ: সিমেন্ট একটি ধারাবাহিক ধাপে তৈরি হয় (গুঁড়ো, তাপ, পেষণ), আর কংক্রিট একটি ধাপেই নির্দিষ্ট অনুপাতে মিশিয়ে তৈরি হয়।
Process tips: use sequencing (first, next, after that, finally) and the passive (the mixture is heated, cement is combined with…). Include the proportions for the concrete. No opinions in Task 1. ক্রম-ভাষা ও passive; কংক্রিটের অনুপাত; Task 1-এ মত নয়।
Task 2: Raising the Price of Petrol to Solve Traffic & Pollution
The prompt (in short): "Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems." To what extent do you agree or disagree? What other measures do you think might be effective? A two-part (opinion) essay. প্রশ্ন: "যানজট ও দূষণ কমাতে পেট্রলের দাম বাড়ানোই সেরা উপায়।" কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত? আর কোন ব্যবস্থা কার্যকর হতে পারে? দুই অংশের প্রবন্ধ।

Raising petrol prices
- Discourages unnecessary car use. অপ্রয়োজনীয় গাড়ি কমে।
- Raises money for public transport. গণপরিবহনে অর্থ।
- But unfair to the poor and rural drivers. গরিবের প্রতি অন্যায়।
Other measures
- Better, cheaper public transport. ভালো গণপরিবহন।
- Cycle lanes and car-sharing. সাইকেল লেন, শেয়ারিং।
- Cleaner fuels and city planning. পরিষ্কার জ্বালানি ও পরিকল্পনা।
A balanced answer partly agrees: higher petrol prices can reduce car use, but on their own they are unfair and insufficient, so they should be combined with better public transport, cycle lanes and cleaner fuels. Answer both parts clearly. ভালো উত্তর আংশিক একমত: দাম বাড়ালে গাড়ি কমে, তবে একা অন্যায্য ও অপর্যাপ্ত — গণপরিবহন, সাইকেল লেন ও পরিষ্কার জ্বালানির সঙ্গে মিলিয়ে। দুই অংশই দিন।
