A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 9, Test 2, Writing. This page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 9, Test 2, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: UK Telephone Calls by Category (Bar Chart)
What the task shows: a bar chart giving the total number of minutes (in billions) of telephone calls in the UK from 1995 to 2002, divided into three categories — local (fixed line), national and international (fixed line), and mobiles. Summarise the main features and make comparisons. টাস্কে যা আছে: একটি বার চার্ট — ১৯৯৫–২০০২-এ UK-তে মোট টেলিফোন কল-মিনিট (বিলিয়নে), তিন ভাগে (স্থানীয় ফিক্সড লাইন, জাতীয়/আন্তর্জাতিক ফিক্সড লাইন, মোবাইল)। মূল বৈশিষ্ট্য ও তুলনা।
What to notice (যা লক্ষ্য করবেন)
- Local fixed-line calls were highest throughout but peaked around 1999 then fell. স্থানীয় কল শীর্ষে, ১৯৯৯-এ চূড়া তারপর হ্রাস।
- National/international calls rose steadily. জাতীয়/আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রমবর্ধমান।
- Mobile calls started tiny but grew dramatically. মোবাইল নাটকীয়ভাবে বাড়ে।
Overview to aim for: local fixed-line calls dominated but declined after 1999, while the other two categories — especially mobile calls — grew steadily over the period, showing a shift in how people communicated. Give the trend first, then key figures. ওভারভিউ: স্থানীয় কল প্রধান ছিল কিন্তু ১৯৯৯-এর পর কমে, অন্য দুই ভাগ (বিশেষত মোবাইল) বাড়ে — যোগাযোগের ধরনে পরিবর্তন।
Chart tips: the data is over time, so use trend language (rose, fell, peaked, grew sharply) and the past tense. Quote a few figures in billions of minutes. সময়ের ডেটা — ট্রেন্ড-ভাষা ও অতীত কাল; কিছু সংখ্যা দিন।
Task 2: Compulsory Community Service in High School
The prompt (in short): some people believe unpaid community service (such as charity work, improving the neighbourhood, or coaching younger children) should be a compulsory part of high-school programmes. To what extent do you agree or disagree? An agree/disagree (opinion) essay. প্রশ্ন: অনেকে মনে করেন বিনা-বেতনের সমাজসেবা (দাতব্য কাজ, এলাকা উন্নয়ন, ছোটদের শেখানো) হাই-স্কুলে বাধ্যতামূলক হওয়া উচিত — কতটা একমত/দ্বিমত?

- Forcing it removes the spirit of volunteering. বাধ্যতা স্বেচ্ছার মূল্য কমায়।
- Adds pressure to a busy study schedule. পড়ায় চাপ।
- Poor-quality work if students are unwilling. অনিচ্ছুক হলে মান কমে।
A balanced answer can largely agree: community service teaches valuable skills and helps society, so it is worth including — but schools should keep the workload reasonable and let students choose the type of service. State how far you agree. ভালো উত্তর অনেকাংশে একমত: সমাজসেবা দক্ষতা শেখায় ও সমাজের উপকার করে, তবে চাপ যুক্তিসংগত রেখে সেবার ধরন বাছাই করতে দেওয়া উচিত।
