Reading Passage 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1–13, which are based on the passage below.

The remarkable honeybee

The honeybee is one of the most important insects on Earth, valued both for the honey it produces and for the part it plays in growing our food. Honeybees live in large, highly organised colonies. A single colony may contain one queen, tens of thousands of female workers and, in the warmer months, a few hundred males called drones. Together these bees behave almost like a single organism, each individual carrying out its own part for the good of the whole.

The queen is the only bee in the colony that lays eggs, and at the height of summer she may lay as many as two thousand in a single day. She can live for several years, far longer than any other bee. The workers, all of which are female, are unable to lay fertile eggs; instead they carry out almost every other task in the hive. As a worker ages, its duties change: young workers clean cells and feed the growing larvae, slightly older ones build the wax comb and guard the entrance, and the oldest leave the hive to forage for food. The drones are male, and their single purpose is to mate with a queen. Those that do not are usually driven out of the hive before winter, when food becomes scarce.

To feed a colony of thousands, bees must share information about where food can be found, and they do so through one of the most remarkable forms of communication in the animal world. A worker that has discovered a rich source of nectar performs a ‘waggle dance’ on the surface of the comb. The direction of the dance, measured against the position of the sun, tells the other bees which way to fly, while the length of the dance tells them how far away the food lies. In this way a single bee can send dozens of others straight to a flowering tree hundreds of metres away.

Making honey is a slow and careful process. Foraging bees collect nectar, a sugary liquid, from flowers and carry it back to the hive in a special stomach, where natural chemicals called enzymes begin to break the sugars down. Back at the hive, the nectar is passed to other workers and deposited in the wax cells of the comb. It is still too watery to keep, so the bees beat their wings to drive off the moisture until it thickens into honey. Finally, each cell is sealed with a cap of wax, and the honey will keep for years.

The hive itself is a marvel of construction. Using wax produced by glands on their own bodies, the workers build thousands of six-sided cells — a shape that stores the most honey while using the least wax. The bees also keep the inside of the hive at a remarkably steady temperature: when it grows too hot, they fan their wings to cool the air, and when it turns cold, they cluster tightly together and shiver to generate warmth. In this way the colony can survive conditions that would quickly kill a single bee left on its own.

Useful though honey is, the greatest value of bees lies elsewhere. As they move from flower to flower in search of nectar, bees carry pollen with them, allowing plants to produce seeds and fruit. A large proportion of the crops that people eat — from apples and almonds to coffee and cotton — depend on pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other insects. Without them, many of these plants would fail, and the cost of replacing their work by hand would be enormous.

For all their importance, honeybees are under threat. One of the most serious dangers is the varroa mite, a tiny parasite that attaches itself to bees and spreads deadly viruses through the colony. Chemicals used to protect crops, particularly a group of pesticides that attack the nervous system of insects, can weaken or kill bees even in small amounts. On top of this, the spread of towns and of vast fields growing only a single crop has reduced the variety of flowers on which bees depend. In some regions, whole colonies have collapsed, their workers simply failing to return.

The good news is that the problem is now widely understood, and a great deal is being done. Beekeepers treat their hives against mites and move them to safer locations. Farmers and gardeners are encouraged to plant wildflowers and to use fewer harmful chemicals, and scientists are searching for bees that can resist disease. The honeybee has survived alongside humans for thousands of years; with care, it may continue to do so for thousands more.

Reading Passage 2

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 14–26, which are based on the passage below.

The return of the tram

A  For much of the twentieth century, the electric tram seemed to belong firmly to the past. In city after city, the tracks were torn up and the vehicles scrapped, and a form of transport that had once been part of daily life all but disappeared. Yet in recent decades the tram has made a remarkable comeback, and gleaming new lines are being built in cities across the world. To understand why, it helps to look at how the tram rose, fell and rose again.

B  Trams first became popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when electric power made them faster and cleaner than the horse-drawn vehicles they replaced. Running on rails set into the road, they could carry large numbers of people cheaply and reliably. By the 1920s, hundreds of cities, from Europe to South America, depended on them, and for ordinary working people the tram was often the only affordable way to travel across a growing city. In some places the network grew so large that it became one of the defining features of the city, and it was the tram, more than anything else, that allowed workers to live at a distance from the factories and offices where they earned their living.

C  The decline came after the Second World War. As private cars became common and buses more numerous, trams began to seem old-fashioned and inconvenient. Cars and buses were not fixed to rails and could go anywhere, and many city authorities came to regard trams as an obstacle to the free flow of traffic. One by one, systems were closed, the rails were removed, and the space was handed over to motor vehicles. By the 1960s, trams had vanished from most cities in Britain and North America, surviving only in a handful of places that could not afford to replace them. In many towns the loss was regretted almost as soon as it happened, but by then the rails were gone and the cost of rebuilding seemed impossible.

D  Several pressures have brought them back. As cities have grown, congestion and air pollution have become serious problems, and governments have set targets to cut the greenhouse gases that cause climate change. Because trams run on electricity, they produce no emissions on the streets where they operate, and a single tram can carry as many passengers as several buses or dozens of private cars. One modern tram may take forty or more cars off the road, and because it runs on its own rails it can glide past the queues of traffic that slow ordinary buses down. For a crowded, polluted city trying to move large numbers of people without adding to its traffic, this combination of clean power and high capacity is exactly what is needed.

E  The advantages of trams reach beyond transport itself. Modern trams are built with low floors, so that passengers using wheelchairs or pushing prams can board easily, and the ride is smoother and quieter than that of a bus. Just as importantly, a tram line is permanent in a way that a bus route is not: once the rails are laid, everyone can see that the service is there to stay. This sense of permanence encourages shops to open and developers to build along the route, and many cities have used new tram lines deliberately to attract investment to run-down districts. Studies of several European cities have found that property values tend to rise once a new line opens, as people compete to live within easy reach of a stop.

F  Trams are not a perfect solution, however. Building a new system is extremely expensive, and the construction work can disrupt a city for years while roads are dug up and rails are laid. A kilometre of new track can cost many times as much as an equivalent bus route, and the money must be found long before the first passenger climbs aboard. Because trams follow fixed rails, their routes cannot easily be changed once they are built, which makes them far less flexible than buses. Even so, most cities that have introduced modern trams have judged the benefits to outweigh the costs, and many are now extending their networks. The vehicle that once seemed to belong to the past, it turns out, may have an important place in the future.

Reading Passage 3

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27–40, which are based on the passage below.

Does money make us happy?

Few beliefs are as widely held as the idea that money brings happiness. Work harder, earn more, and life will surely get better — or so we tell ourselves. The truth, according to decades of research, is a good deal more complicated. Money does matter to our happiness, but not in the simple way that most people assume, and understanding the difference can change the way we live.

At the lower end of the income scale, the link is clear and strong. For a family struggling to afford food, housing and medical care, more money reliably makes life better, removing worry and hardship. Above a certain level, however, the picture changes. Once our basic needs are comfortably met, each extra amount of income adds less and less to our sense of wellbeing. The difference that a pay rise makes to a person on a low wage is far greater than the difference the same rise makes to someone who is already comfortable.

Part of the reason is that we do not judge our wealth on its own, but by comparing it with the wealth of those around us. A pay rise feels wonderful — until we learn that a colleague received a larger one. If everyone's income goes up together, the extra money brings surprisingly little additional happiness, because our position relative to others has not changed. This constant comparison, the writer suggests, is one of the main reasons that greater wealth so often disappoints. The trouble is that there is almost always someone richer to compare ourselves with, so the pleasure of earning more tends to fade almost as soon as we feel it.

There is a further trap. As our income rises, so do our expectations. The luxuries of a few years ago quickly become the necessities of today, and we find ourselves working harder simply to stand still. Economists sometimes call this the ‘hedonic treadmill’: however fast we run, our sense of satisfaction tends to return to roughly where it began.

How we spend our money matters too. Studies repeatedly find that spending on experiences — a trip, a concert, a meal with friends — brings more lasting happiness than spending on possessions. A new gadget delights us at first, but we quickly get used to it, a process psychologists call adaptation. The memory of a good experience, by contrast, can bring pleasure for years, and often grows richer as we share the story with others. Part of the reason may be that experiences become part of who we are, woven into the story of our lives in a way that objects never quite manage.

Perhaps the most surprising finding concerns generosity. Across many different cultures, people who spend money on others, or give it away to good causes, report greater happiness than those who spend the same amount on themselves. In one experiment, people given a small sum of money were happier at the end of the day if they had been asked to spend it on someone else rather than on themselves. Giving, it seems, is one of the most reliable ways to turn money into wellbeing.

A related idea concerns time. People who choose free time over extra income — turning down overtime, say, or a demanding promotion — often report being happier than those who take the money, because the hours spent with family and friends do more for wellbeing than the goods a larger salary can buy. Yet many of us go on sacrificing the first for the second, telling ourselves that we will slow down once we have earned a little more.

None of this means that money is unimportant. Poverty causes real misery, and no amount of clever spending can make up for not having enough. What the research shows, rather, is that beyond the point where our needs are met, how we use our money matters far more than how much of it we have. Money, in the end, is a tool. The lesson is not that we should stop caring about it, but that we should think more carefully about what we do with it — spending on experiences and on other people, and protecting the time that money can so easily swallow up.

Money and wellbeing

For people on a low income, extra money reliably removes (31) and makes life better. Once basic needs are met, however, each additional amount adds (32) to our happiness. One reason is that we judge our wealth by (33) ourselves with others, so a rise in pay brings little joy if a colleague gets more. We also quickly get used to the things we buy, a process known as (34) . Research suggests that money spent on (35) brings longer-lasting happiness than money spent on possessions, and that giving money to (36) can make us happier than spending it on ourselves.
