The IELTS Academic Reading test assesses a wide range of reading skills: reading for gist, for main ideas and for detail; understanding inference and implied meaning; and recognising a writer's opinions, attitude and purpose. You get 3 long passages and 40 questions in 60 minutes — with no extra transfer time. Texts come from books, journals, magazines and newspapers.

The killer difference from Listening: there is no extra time to copy answers. Whatever you write on the answer sheet must be done inside the 60 minutes. Transfer answers as you go, passage by passage.

Test Format & Structure (পরীক্ষার ফরম্যাট এবং কাঠামো)
Three passages of increasing difficulty, 2,150–2,750 words in total. The smartest students budget their time deliberately — spending a little less on the easy Passage 1 to protect the hard Passage 3.

The Academic Reading paper uses eleven official question types (source: ielts.org, British Council & IDP). Below, each is explained with its number, a Bangla gloss, and the one tip that matters most.

The Trickiest Decision: T/F/NG vs Y/N/NG (সবচেয়ে কঠিন সিদ্ধান্ত)
These two families cause the most lost marks. This decision tree keeps them straight.
Use TRUE/FALSE for facts, YES/NO for the writer's opinion. "তথ্য" হলে T/F/NG, "মতামত" হলে Y/N/NG।
Essential Skills & Strategies (অপরিহার্য দক্ষতা এবং কৌশল)
Two reading gears win the Reading test: skimming for the big picture and scanning for specific facts. You almost never read every word.
দুটি পঠন-কৌশল Reading জেতায়: বড় ছবির জন্য skimming আর নির্দিষ্ট তথ্যের জন্য scanning। প্রায় কখনোই প্রতিটি শব্দ পড়া হয় না।
Skimming (স্কিমিং)
- Read title, subheadings, first & last sentence of each paragraph. শিরোনাম ও প্রথম/শেষ বাক্য পড়ুন।
- Goal: grasp the gist & structure in 2–3 minutes. লক্ষ্য: সারাংশ বোঝা।
- Best for: Matching Headings, general orientation. শিরোনাম মিলকরণে সেরা।
Scanning (স্ক্যানিং)
- Sweep the page for names, dates, numbers, keywords. নাম, তারিখ, সংখ্যা খুঁজুন।
- Don't read — hunt. Stop when the keyword appears. পড়বেন না, খুঁজুন।
- Best for: T/F/NG, sentence completion, short answers. তথ্যভিত্তিক প্রশ্নে সেরা।
Paraphrasing Is Everything (Paraphrasing-ই মূল চাবিকাঠি)
The question rewords the passage using synonyms. Spotting the match is the core reading skill.
"The new policy reduced traffic in the city centre."
In the passage"Following the scheme, the number of vehicles in the downtown area fell sharply."
"reduced" ↔ "fell sharply", "city centre" ↔ "downtown area" — প্রতিশব্দ চেনাই আসল কাজ।
Time rule: roughly 1.5 minutes per question. If you're stuck for over 2 minutes, mark your best guess and move on — you can return if time allows.
সময়ের নিয়ম: প্রতি প্রশ্নে প্রায় ১.৫ মিনিট। ২ মিনিটের বেশি আটকে থাকলে সেরা অনুমান লিখে এগিয়ে যান।
How to Write Answers Correctly (সঠিকভাবে উত্তর লেখার নিয়ম)

"NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS" means two, not three — an over-length answer is marked wrong even if correct in meaning.
T/F/NG vs Y/N/NGভুল করবেন না
Write T/F/NG only for factual questions and Y/N/NG only for opinion questions. Never swap the labels.
Spellingবানান
Answers are copied from the passage, so spelling must be exact. Copy carefully, letter by letter.
Capitalisationবড় হাতের অক্ষর
Writing every answer in CAPITAL LETTERS on the sheet is the safest way to avoid any issues.
Remember: there is no separate transfer time in Reading. Write directly and neatly on the answer sheet within the 60 minutes.

Academic Reading is marked out of 40 and converted to a 1–9 band. Note that Academic Reading is graded a little more strictly than General Training. Boundaries below are approximate.

Do's (করণীয়)
- Skim the passage before the questions. প্রশ্নের আগে skim করুন।
- Underline keywords in every question. মূলশব্দ আন্ডারলাইন করুন।
- Watch word limits closely. শব্দসীমা খেয়াল রাখুন।
- Transfer answers as you finish each passage. প্যাসেজ শেষে উত্তর লিখুন।
- Attempt all 40 — never leave a blank. ৪০টিই চেষ্টা করুন।
Don'ts (বর্জনীয়)
- Don't read every single word. প্রতিটি শব্দ পড়বেন না।
- Don't over-spend on one hard question. এক প্রশ্নে বেশি সময় নয়।
- Don't leave answers blank. খালি রাখবেন না।
- Don't write T/F/NG for a Y/N/NG question. লেবেল গুলিয়ে ফেলবেন না।
- Don't rely on keyword-matching alone. শুধু শব্দ মিলিয়ে নয়।
Your Path to Band 7+ (Band 7+ অর্জনের পথ)
Phase 1: Familiarisation
Goal: Learn all 11 question types. ১১ ধরনের প্রশ্ন বোঝা।
Do: 2–3 untimed tests (Cambridge IELTS). Prioritise accuracy over speed; analyse mistakes by type. টাইমার ছাড়া টেস্ট; নির্ভুলতায় জোর দিন।
Phase 2: Skill Building
Goal: Grow speed, vocabulary and core skills. গতি, শব্দভান্ডার ও দক্ষতা।
Do: Read academic articles daily; drill skimming & scanning; keep a synonyms notebook; target your weakest type. প্রতিদিন আর্টিকেল পড়ুন; synonym নোটবুক রাখুন।
Phase 3: Practice & Refinement
Goal: Perfect timing and exam strategy. সময় ও কৌশল নিখুঁত করা।
Do: 3–4 full timed tests weekly (60 min, no breaks). Review every error and understand its cause. সপ্তাহে ৩–৪টি সময়বদ্ধ টেস্ট; প্রতিটি ভুল বুঝুন।
Vocabulary is your ceiling. Read one English article daily and log 5 new words with a synonym for each. Reading band rises with vocabulary depth.
